“the journey of two individuals who unintentionally help each other heal“
Fawad Khan is making his much-anticipated return to Bollywood, teaming up with Vaani Kapoor for Abir Gullal.
The shooting for the film has officially started in London, with filming taking place at various locations.
This marks Fawad’s re-entry into the Indian film industry after an eight-year hiatus.
The first look of the film showcases Fawad and Vaani in a tender moment, lying on the grass together.
In the image, Fawad gazes up at the sky while Vaani cuddles up to him.
The film is directed by Aarti S Bagdi and is produced by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens and Aarjay Pictures.
Key producers include Vivek B Agrawal, Avantika Hari, and Rakesh Sippy.
Filming of Abir Gullal is scheduled to continue throughout October and November 2024.
Aarti hinted at the film’s premise, stating:
“The film explores the journey of two individuals who unintentionally help each other heal, with love blossoming as an unexpected consequence.”
The producers expressed their excitement for the project, noting Fawad’s significant global fan base.
In a joint statement, they said: “We anticipate that audiences and his fans will wholeheartedly embrace this film, as it showcases him in his most endearing role yet.
“The chemistry between Fawad and Vaani is expected to light up the screen with their captivating performances and undeniable charm.”

However, Fawad Khan’s decision to return to Bollywood has sparked disappointment among some of his Pakistani fans.
Many said they felt let down by his choice to reject multiple high-profile projects in Pakistan to do an OTT film with Vaani Kapoor.
A user wrote: “He wouldn’t do mainstream television here but will agree to whatever average s**t content he’s offered in a country where people insult our artists time and again.”
One said: “His Bollywood obsession has been his downfall.
“Could have done some amazing work in Pakistan, but he’s been sitting at his bedside waiting for Bollywood’s call.”
Another remarked:
“People should start ignoring this ‘Superstar’ maybe then he will have some sense.”
“Apparently, he is too big for Lollywood but not when it comes Bollywood. Waiting for his downfall now.”
This comes against the backdrop of a complicated relationship between Pakistani artists and the Indian film industry.
Since 2016, there has been a ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian films due to ongoing political tensions.
However, in 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition aimed at formally prohibiting Pakistani artists from working in India, stating:
“Arts, music, sports, culture, dance, and so on are the activities which rise above nationalities, cultures, and nations and truly bring about peace, tranquillity, unity, and harmony in nation and between nations.”
