This raised concerns that the timing of the film’s release
Abir Gulaal is stirring controversy in India after it was announced that Fawad Khan would star in the film.
Set on the streets of London, the film explores the journey of two individuals “who unintentionally help each other heal, with love blossoming as an unexpected consequence”.
Abir Gulaal also stars Vaani Kapoor but Fawad’s casting has sparked backlash from various political groups in India.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena have strongly opposed Fawad Khan’s involvement in the film.
They stated that due to ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, Pakistani artists should not be allowed to work in India.
The groups have announced plans to block the film’s release in Maharashtra and warned of potential protests.
The controversy has also drawn attention from the Indian Film and TV Directors’ Association.
This raised concerns that the timing of the film’s release, combined with Fawad Khan’s casting, could provoke civil unrest.
Despite the growing opposition, the filmmakers have not issued a public statement on whether the film will release as planned or face delays.
In the midst of the controversy, Mawra Hocane has publicly supported him.
Mawra expressed confidence that Fawad would excel in his role, stating that she believes Abir Gulaal will do well at the box office.
In a recent interview, Mawra was asked about the ongoing objections to Pakistani artists working in India.
She responded: “I don’t take it personally. This is how the world works, right? I truly believe if it’s meant to happen, it will. I block out the noise around my work.”
Mawra added: “I love to do what I do, so I do not let these things affect me.”
She also mentioned that she had called Fawad Khan to wish him well, saying:
“When my colleagues do well, we definitely reach out to each other. We wish each other luck. I truly wish the best for everyone.”
Sunny Deol also supported Fawad Khan’s return to Indian cinema:
“See, I wouldn’t like to go on to the political side because that’s where things start getting messy.”
“We are actors; we work for everyone all over the world. Even if somebody is watching or not, we are for everyone. So, nothing like that.
“The more the way the world has become, we should stay global and let there be more countries; that’s the way it should be.”
As Abir Gulaal faces its share of challenges ahead of its release, Fawad Khan’s fans continue to support him.
They hope that the film will be released without any problems in May 2025 as per schedule.
