“Ghulan Mohammed subjected his victim to a terrifying ordeal"

Fake taxi driver Ghulan Mohammed was jailed for seven years and three months for sexually assaulting a drunk woman.

The terrifying ordeal came in December 2023 after he had been driving around Leicester city centre looking to have sex with a prostitute.

Mohammed saw a woman who was “severely incapacitated” and could not speak much English.

He persuaded her to get into his car and then drove to several remote locations, including a hotel car park, where he sexually assaulted her and tried to rape her before returning to the city centre.

When Mohammed stopped at a petrol station, the woman tried to seek help from staff.

Her friends were able to track her phone and found the victim with Mohammed in his car.

She was muddy, partly undressed and covered in bruises, and had her bank cards stolen by Mohammed.

Mohammed, who had no trousers on, then followed the woman as her friends led her away, trying to persuade her to get back in his car.

After his arrest, Mohammed denied that anything had happened without her consent.

He was convicted of four sexual assaults and one count of attempted rape. He was also found guilty of theft and four counts of fraud.

Mohammed was jailed for seven years and three months.

After sentencing, Maimuna Bappa, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said:

“Ghulan Mohammed subjected his victim to a terrifying ordeal, targeting her and preying on her because she was vulnerable through drink.

“The victim had very little recollection of what had happened, other than that she was being attacked and was determined not to give in to Mohammed’s sexual advances.

“Ghulan Mohammed can have been in no doubt that she was not consenting to any sexual activity but continued to assault her, trying to get her into a hotel room and even following her when she had been recovered by her friends.

“The picture of these events was clear – that this is an extremely dangerous sexual predator and that the victim has shown extraordinary courage to resist him during the attack and to give what help she can to the investigation and prosecution.”

Important evidence in the case came from a translator app on the victim’s phone, which recorded some conversations.

The recordings included the woman asking Mohammed if he was a taxi driver, and later shouting at him to stop what he was doing and asking for her clothes back.

CCTV and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera data were used to trace Mohammed across Leicester before he picked up his victim.

It revealed he had been in areas more likely to be frequented by prostitutes.

CCTV of Mohammed and the victim also showed that she was drunk and unwilling to get into his car.

Footage from the petrol station proved the woman was trying to get away from Mohammed.

Ms Bappa added: “Pieced together, this was all evidence that the victim had been vulnerable, subjected to an attack and had been actively resisting any sexual activity.

“Ghulan Mohammed gave an untrue account that there had been a consensual sexual encounter, but it was clear that the victim was not consenting.”
