Former UFC fighter Jake Shields has slammed the husband of a Brazilian influencer who was gang-raped by seven men in India.
He claimed that he did not protect his wife and only cared about his own injuries.
Fernanda and Vicente are known for their motorcycle travels across the world, documenting their journeys.
The couple stopped in Dumka, Jharkhand, to camp there overnight when they were attacked.
Hours after the couple detailed the ordeal, Shields took to X to give his controversial take.
The American tweeted: “His wife was raped by 7 men and the man hardly has bruises.
“If 7 men tried to rape any girl I’m with I need to be dead or unconscious.”
In a harrowing video, the influencer couple explained what happened, showing bruises on their faces.
Vicente revealed that his mouth had been “destroyed” by the attackers, who have since been arrested. He was also hit over the head with a helmet and a rock.
Observing the clip, Jake Shields said: “It appears he got hit once or twice and decided to watch instead of fight.”
He added: “She will leave him and rightfully so within a year.
“As a man, you should be willing to die to protect your girl without a second thought.”
Context on X rebutted the MMA fighter’s take on the gang rape, clarifying to users:
“This is misleading. The original post states the man had a knife to his throat.”
Jake Shields doubled down on his opinion, tweeting:
“Men want a woman who is loyal and will obey them but the same man isn’t willing to put himself in danger to protect her.
“Why would a girl be loyal and obey a man who is just gonna sit and watch her get gang-raped?”
He also stated that every man should learn martial arts, posting:
“This is also why every man should study the art of fighting.
“In most cases, a man who knows how to fight can win against seven who do not.
“Often if you drop one or two the rest get scared and run.”

Hitting out at those who disagreed with him, Shields said:
“Y’all are a bunch of cowards.”
One user had pointed out: “Easy to say when you weren’t there or involved.
“Wait until you are in the situation and let us know how it goes.”
The former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion fired back:
“I’ve been in some extremely crazy situations and always immediately reacted. Some of us aren’t cowards.”
