Mother charged with Murder of Shay Kang in Rowley Regis

"This is obviously going to be a really difficult time"

A mother has been charged with the murder of her 10-year-old daughter, whose body was found in Rowley Regis, West Midlands on March 4, 2024.

Shay Kang was found with serious injuries at an address in Rowley Regis at around 12:10 pm.

The girl, who attended Brickhouse Primary School, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her mother Jaskirat Kaur, also known as Jasmine Kang, was arrested.

The 33-year-old has now been charged with murder and will appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court later on March 6.

Shay is believed to have lived at the house with her mother.

However, the schoolgirl had reportedly been in care until just days before her death.

She had been seen playing with children in the cul-de-sac on the evening of March 3, several hours before police were called to the property.

Locals held a balloon release in memory of Shay Kang at a playing field opposite her house.

Her school’s headteacher, named only as Mr Newby, previously told parents in a message:

“This is obviously going to be a really difficult time for the children and the local community, as we all come to terms with this devastating news.

“I know we are all devastated by this news but I know we will get through this difficult time together.”

In a statement, Brickhouse Primary School said: “Our school is deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our children.

“Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well liked by all, and she will be very sadly missed by everyone.

“School is the heart of the community and we have already begun working with our children and staff to support them following this devastating news.”

A cordon remains in place at the property while police continue their investigations, and a post-mortem will be held in due course to establish the cause of death.

Shay’s godmother Kayleigh Colclough posted a series of heartbreaking tributes and photos on Facebook. Kayleigh, who previously lived with Kaur and Shay in Smethwick, West Midlands, wrote:

“I’ll miss you baby girl. My heart hurts.”

In a separate post, she wrote: “I took them in and they lived with me for 5 years.

“I wouldn’t say I’m much of a godmother now I let you down but I PROMISE YOU I WILL GET YOU JUSTICE.

“I promise you I will get justice for Shay. I’m grieving for a child that wasn’t even mine.”

Detective Inspector Dan Jarratt, of West Midlands Police, who is leading the investigation, said:

“Our thoughts remain with Shay’s family and friends.

“Her tragic death has had a profound impact on those who knew her as well as the wider community.

“We ask that they are left to grieve in private as our enquiries continue.”
