“Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child"
A mother has admitted killing her daughter Shay Kang, who was described as a “bright, happy, fun-loving child”.
At Wolverhampton Crown Court, Jaskirat Kaur admitted manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
On March 4, 2024, the 10-year-old schoolgirl’s body was found dead in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, after police were called to her home at around 12:10 pm.
Just hours before the discovery, Shay had been seen playing with children in the cul-de-sac.
At an inquest, it was found that Shay died as a result of stab wounds to the chest.
In a tribute, her school Brickhouse Primary School said:
“Our school is deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our children.
“Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well-liked by all, and she will be very sadly missed by everyone.
“School is the heart of the community and we have already begun working with our children and staff to support them following this devastating news.”
Shay is believed to have lived at the house with her mother.
However, the schoolgirl had reportedly been in care until just days before her death.
After Shay’s death, her godmother Kayleigh Colclough posted a series of heartbreaking tributes and photos on Facebook.
Kayleigh, who previously lived with Kaur and Shay in Smethwick, West Midlands, wrote:
“I’ll miss you baby girl. My heart hurts.”
In a separate post, she wrote: “I took them in and they lived with me for 5 years.
“I wouldn’t say I’m much of a godmother now I let you down but I PROMISE YOU I WILL GET YOU JUSTICE.
“I promise you I will get justice for Shay. I’m grieving for a child that wasn’t even mine.”
Kaur denied murdering her daughter but prosecution counsel Sally Howes KC accepted her guilty plea to manslaughter.
Defence barrister Katherine Goddard KC said there was “no dispute over the facts” of the case.
Judge Michael Chambers KC told Kaur she was due to be sentenced on October 25, 2024, adding:
“There will be a need for further reports, so it is in your interests to cooperate with the preparation of those reports.”
Shay Kang’s funeral will take place on September 5, with the procession leaving Brickhouse Primary School in Dudhill Road, Rowley Regis, at approximately 10:30 am.
The funeral service will then take place at Rowley Regis Crematorium, Powke Lane, at 11:30 am.
The funeral directors, FP Gaunt and Sons Ltd, encouraged the community to “show as much support as possible” for Shay as it has “the privilege of looking after her final journey”.
