"he does it for the thrill and excitement".
Dinesh Chawla, the former hotel partner of Donald Trump’s family was arrested and charged with stealing luggage from an airport in the United States.
In the past, he had partnered with the President’s family on four hotels.
Mr Chawla, the CEO of Chawla Hotels, was captured on airport security cameras taking luggage from the baggage claim at Memphis International Airport on August 18, 2019.
Officers stated that he put the stolen suitcase in his car before going back inside the airport to get on a flight.
According to the airport police, they searched Mr Chawla’s car and discovered the suitcase as well as another piece of luggage that had been taken from the airport a month earlier.
When he returned to Memphis on Thursday, August 22, 2019, Mr Chawla was arrested.
According to a police affidavit, he admitted stealing the two pieces of luggage and their contents, valued at around $4,000.
Mr Chawla, who lives in Cleveland, Mississippi, also confessed to stealing other luggage “over a long period of time” but the records provided no details of other thefts.
According to the police records, Mr Chawla told an officer “that he knows stealing luggage is wrong, but he does it for the thrill and excitement”.
The New York Times reported that the arrest resulted in two felony theft charges.
Mr Chawla and his brother Suresh Chawla operate a chain of hotels and motels in the Mississippi Delta. Until February 2019, they were hotel partners with the Trump Organisation.
The Trump brothers, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, withdraw from the undertaking. They stated that they were led to the decision after being “harassed” by the Democrats.
They parted ways with the Chawlas but it was on good terms as the Trumps praised the Chawla brothers.
Since the end of the partnership, Mr Chawla has continued construction one of his biggest developments in Cleveland. The project is set to include a hotel, restaurant and entertainment.
The partnership between the Trumps and the Chawlas began in 1988 when the brothers’ father, VK Chawla, sought the help of President Trump, then a New York real estate developer.
Chawla asked for advice on how to set up a motel in Greenwood, Mississippi.
Trump suggested that he apply for a minority Small Business Administration Loan. Chawla was successful in obtaining one.
Today, there are now Chawla Hotels across the Mississippi Delta.
