“I also heard about the money spent"

Since making history at the Oscars, RRR has become the subject of various rumours.

There has been speculation that the filmmakers spent a lot of money on the film’s awards campaign in the United States.

It is rumoured that up to Rs. 80 Crore (£7.8 million) was spent.

Ahead of the 2023 Oscars, RRR was screened at various theatres across the United States and the lead stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR appeared on several talk shows to promote the film.

There were reports that the two actors spent Rs. 25 Crore (£2.5 million) each but this was after producer DVV Danayya refused to invest in the campaign.

The RRR producer has now responded to the rumours.

Admitting he is aware of the rumours, Danayya said:

“I also heard about the money spent for the Oscar campaign. I haven’t spent any money on the campaign and I am not aware of what happened exactly.

“But no one spends Rs. 80 Crore for an award event. There would be no profits involved in it.”

Another rumour that has been circulating is that only Chandrabose and MM Keeravani along with their spouses were given tickets for the Oscars.

SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan and Jr NTR reportedly had to pay Rs. 20 Lakh (£19,000) to attend the event.

However, the rumours were refuted.

Telugu filmmaker Tammareddy Bharadwaja had claimed the film cost Rs. 600 Crore (£59 million) to make. Speaking about the rumoured Oscars campaign budget, he added:

“Now they (RRR team) have spent another Rs. 80 Crore for its Oscar promotions, therefore we can make eight to ten films out of its promotional budget itself!”

RRR made history at the Oscars by becoming the first Indian film to win for its music, winning ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Naatu Naatu’.

The film won the same award at the Golden Globes.

Danayya had previously expressed his happiness for the film’s win.

He said: “I am very proud to be the producer of the movie RRR. Thanks to SS Rajamouli for the movie.

“The whole unit worked very hard. More than 30 days of rehearsals were held. The song was shot in Ukraine.

“Thanks to PM Modi, AP CM Jagan, and former CM Chandrababu Naidu for the tweets.”

RRR has received huge praise in the United States.

In one instance, there was a light show in sync to ‘Naatu Naatu’, performed by Tesla cars.

Reacting to the light show, SS Rajamouli said:

“Truly overwhelmed by this tribute to Naatu Naatu from New Jersey!”
