Sequels are a tough nut to crack, in Hollywood or Bollywood
On 21st December 2012, Chulbul Pandey, one of Bollywood’s most iconic characters played by Salman Khan returned after a gap of over 2 years on the big screen. The film Dabangg 2 marks the second instalment of the franchise, which established with Dabangg in 2010.
Dabangg 2 is the first movie to be directed by Indian producer Arbaaz Khan, who has also acted in a supporting role in the film. Dabangg 2 stars Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Prakash Raj and Arbaaz Khan.
Two Bollywood item queens are also part of the sequel. Kareena Kapoor Khan is seen in the item girl song ‘Fevicol Se’ and Malika Arora Khan has made an appearance in the track ‘Pandey Jee Seeti.’
The music of the film has been composed by the famous duo Sajid Wajid, who also composed the music for the first movie in 2010. They have built a strong rapport with Salman Khan and have been composing hit music numbers for the actor since Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya [1998].
Audiences are loving the music of Dabangg 2 and every track on YouTube has received extraordinary viewing figures. The song ‘Fevicol Se’ and ‘Dagabaaz Re’ have over 3 million views on the website.
Dabangg 2 unfolds a story, which continues a couple of months after the events of the last movie. It tells the story of Chulbul Pandey [Salman Khan], a fearless cop who is transferred to Kanpur to eradicate crime in the city. He is married to Rajo [Sonakshi Sinha] and lives with his father [Vinod Khanna] and brother [Arbaaz Khan].
Chulbul’s life is shaken up when he meets underworld don/aspiring politician Thakur Bachcha Lal [Prakash Raj] who threatens to ruin the perfect family lifestyle Chulbul has always desired for.
Will Chulbul be able to clean up the streets of Kanpur? Will he be able to prevent Thakur from terrorising the local community? Dabangg 2 promises a blend of comedy, action and romance that guarantees to entertain audiences.
National award winning Indian film actor, Prakash Raj was last paired with Salman Khan in the thriller movie Wanted [2009].
Abhinav Kashyap directed Dabangg [2010], and he was prepared to direct the sequel. However there was a huge controversy over the sequel, which resulted in Abhinav Kashyap walking out of the sequel, leaving no alternative but for producer Arbaaz Khan to step in as director.
Brother Anurag Kashyap, director of the Gangs Of Wasseypur series [2012], defending his brother on Twitter said:
“Salman Khan thinks he made my brother’s life. Hope he does the same for Arbaaz when he does Dabangg 2. All The Best.”
“Abhinav Singh Kashyap, you rock… I love you… Show them what you are made off,” he added.
Arbaaz Khan responding to this tweeted: “Instead of GRATTITUDE some people show ATTITUDE. Wah kya zamana aa gaya hai. Time will tell. Kabhi asliat ko bahar aane mein time lagta hai.”
Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama gave the film 4/5 and said:
“On the whole, DABANGG 2 has Salman Khan, Salman Khan and Salman Khan + Entertainment, Entertainment and Entertainment in large doses. The film has the masala to work big time with the masses. This one will rewrite the rules of the game and the festive occasion [Christmas and New Year] will aid its potential. Sure shot Blockbuster!”
He also tweeted about the strong opening weekend the film has recieved, saying: “Dabangg 2 actuals* Fri 21.10 cr, Sat 19.06 cr. Total: 40.17 cr nett.” This figure is the biggest non-holiday opening in the history of Hindi Cinema.
The first Dabangg movie grossed in 14.40 crore on the opening day, and 15.75 crore on the second day. The sequel has managed to beat these figures by 10 crore.
Bollywood Hungama has reported that Dabangg 2 has had a 60 crore + net weekend. This figure is higher than the previous instalment which had only grossed in roughly 40 crore.

In five days, box-office figures reported Dabangg 2 collecting Rs 92.66 crores, indicating that the movie will certainly be a part of the Rs 100 crore club.
Bollywood expert Komal Natha saw the film and expressed his views saying: “On the whole, Dabangg 2 is, without doubt, a blockbuster. It may be routine and may have its flaws but, overall, it entertains wonderfully. Most importantly, it has more than enough masala for the millions of Salman Khan fans. Salman Khan carries the entire film on his shoulders.”
Actor Ritesh Deshmukh loved the film and tweeted: “Saw Dabangg2 last night @ArbaazSkhan take a bow brother-BLOCKBUSTER all the way- enjoyed it more than part one.”
Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn praised the film and said: “Just saw Dabangg2…Pandeyji humne bhi kya seeti bajayee aap ke liye!! Cheers.”
Director Arbaaz Khan in an interview with ‘The Times of India’ spoke on the success of the film. He said:
“Yes. I am genuinely feeling relieved. It was a huge weight on my shoulders. I was aware of the cynicism and I know a lot of people said I wouldn’t be able to deliver. But I relied on my instincts and decided to let my work do the talking.”
This movie was shot on a high budget of 60 crores, however as it was widely released, the creators were quietly confident that the film would do well at the box office.
Even before the film had actually released, the producers had virtually recovered all the costs. The movie’s satellite rights had been sold for a humongous 45 crores to Star Gold. The Times of India reported that Dabangg 2 is worth 180 crores, which takes into account all of the rights and distribution deals. This beats RA One’s record, which sold for 137 crore back in 2011.
Sequels are a tough nut to crack, in Hollywood or Bollywood. Many producers fail to get them right, However recently we have seen many successful sequels, including Housefull 2 [2012], Jannat 2 [2012], Don 2 [2011], Krrish [2006], Golmaal series [2006-2010], Munna Bhai series [2003- 2006] and many more.
Reports say that Dabangg 3 is on the cards. Talking about the third serving, Salman Khan said: “We have our third film ready and it will go back and show how Chulbul Pandey becomes Chulbul Pandey.”
Salman Khan has once again, shown his star power and delivered another Blockbuster film at the box office. For over two years now, Salman has provided three things: entertainment, entertainment and more entertainment, ensuring that all his fans keep watching his movies.
The film is tipped to do exceptionally well and possibly challenge ‘Jab Tak Hai Hai Jaan’ at the box office. For now, brothers Arbaaz and Salman can definitely celebrate with DaBangg Dabangg!
