"This may have driven him to take such an extreme step.”
A Bangladeshi man ended his life after killing two of his young daughters by ingesting poison.
The tragic incident, believed to be driven by financial distress and domestic disputes, has left the local community in shock.
The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Abdur Rouf and his daughters, Ayesha Akhtar and Khadija Akhtar.
According to police and local sources, Rouf, a grocer and father of four, had been struggling with mounting debt.
He had recently borrowed seven lakh taka (£4,500) from a villager.
His financial troubles reportedly caused frequent arguments with his wife, further worsening his emotional state.
Two days before the incident, his wife left their home with their one-year-old daughter after a dispute.
Her husband tried to reconcile with her, but another argument broke out late on the night of February 10, 2025.
Hours later, around 3:00 am, he allegedly forced his two daughters to ingest poison before consuming it himself.
Neighbours were alerted by the children’s screams and rushed the three to a nearby hospital in Chunarughat.
Due to the severity of their condition, they were referred to the 250-bed Habiganj district hospital.
Doctors confirmed that the two children had already died upon their arrival.
Their father, Rouf, succumbed to his injuries later in the morning.
Dr Moin Uddin Chowdhury, a medical officer at Habiganj Sadar Hospital, stated that Rouf passed away at around 10:30 am.
His younger brother, Sujan Mia, expressed his grief, saying:
“My brother was struggling with debt and often argued with his wife over financial problems.
“This may have driven him to take such an extreme step.”
Mohammed Nur Alam, officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police Station, revealed that Rouf had planned to use the borrowed money to travel abroad.
However, after the fight with his wife, financial struggles eventually led him to this tragic decision.
Alam said:
“The financial burden ultimately led him to take his own life and that of his two daughters.”
Authorities have launched an investigation to gather further details.
The heartbreaking incident has sparked discussions on the pressures of financial instability and mental health issues.
Many are highlighting how suicide due to financial struggles is a recurring thing in society.
There have been calls for stronger community support systems to prevent them.
A user said: “This is why we need free mental health facilities accessible in our community.”
One commented: “People don’t commit such actions. They are driven towards it. Poor kids.”
Another questioned: “Poison must not be so easily sold.”
