TTP has frequently targeted security officials

Two Pakistani Customs officials and the President of the Waziristan Chamber of Commerce were kidnapped by unidentified individuals in South Waziristan.

The kidnapping happened on February 13, 2025, further exacerbating security concerns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

The victims were identified as Customs Superintendent Nisar Abbasi, Inspector Khushal and Waziristan Chamber of Commerce President Saif-ur-Rehman Wazir.

They were kidnapped in the Sholam area while returning from the Angoor Adda border crossing.

Deputy Commissioner Nasir Khan confirmed that the attackers intercepted their vehicle, forcibly taking them to an undisclosed location.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the abduction, but suspicions point toward the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

TTP has intensified its activities in KP since the collapse of its ceasefire agreement with the Pakistani state in November 2022.

TTP has frequently targeted security officials, government employees, and civilians in acts of violence, including assassinations and kidnappings.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the business community, prompting strong reactions from local trade organisations.

The Wana Trade Union and the Waziristan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI) have condemned the abduction.

They have urged authorities to take immediate action for the safe recovery of the kidnapped individuals.

Traders have warned that continued insecurity in the region will harm business activity.

They have also threatened to stage protests if the law-and-order situation does not improve.

The kidnapping is the latest in a series of similar incidents in KP, raising alarms over the deteriorating security landscape.

Just weeks ago, militants abducted several workers from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in Lakki Marwat.

In another incident, a Pakistan Red Crescent Society worker was taken in South Waziristan’s Azam Warsak area.

While no group has officially claimed responsibility for this latest abduction, authorities suspect the involvement of militant factions operating in the region.

The police and district administration have launched an investigation, though an official case had not been registered as of the latest reports.

The rise in militant activity has placed Islamabad in a difficult position.

Pakistan is repeatedly blaming Afghanistan for providing safe havens to groups like the TTP.

Afghan officials deny these allegations, insisting that Pakistan’s security challenges are a domestic issue.

With the fate of the kidnapped individuals still unknown, security forces face mounting pressure to act swiftly.

The incident underscores the growing instability in South Waziristan.

Kidnappings and militant attacks have become increasingly common, posing a significant threat to both government personnel and civilians.
