"This kind of apathy is alarming."

ASP Shehrbano Naqvi addressed the cyberbullying and online hate following the controversial PGC incident.

In an Instagram Story, she voiced her concerns about the ease with which people can post hateful comments from behind their screens.

She stated: “It’s very easy to type hateful things when you’re not held accountable.

“This kind of apathy is alarming. We should be scared of such behaviour.”

The incident involved allegations of rape against a female student at Punjab College, which quickly went viral on social media.

Amid the uproar, Naqvi faced accusations of lying or covering up the incident.

She noted that many of the hateful messages she received were from women and described them as “offensive.”

In subsequent posts, she shared screenshots of the abusive messages flooding her inbox.

Many of them accused her of distorting facts to conceal the alleged rape.

The incident has sparked intense debate online, with various opinions divided over the claims.

Some argued that the unrest is fuelled by misinformation, while others expressed scepticism about the government’s narrative.

Following that, in a video message with ASP Shehrbano Naqvi, the girl’s father and uncle, with their faces concealed, declared:

“There has been no sexual assault.”

They expressed surprise at the protests, clarifying that she was hospitalised due to an injury sustained from a fall at home.

Naqvi also stated that the girl in question had been hospitalised well before the alleged incident.

She clarified: “Her medical reports are available, and the record of her hospital stays is also accessible.”

Furthermore, Naqvi explained that confusion arose due to two girls in the college sharing the same name.

One of them was perfectly fine, while the other was a hospitalised student.

ASP Naqvi reiterated the importance of avoiding false reports.

She urged the public not to jump to conclusions based on unverified information.

She emphasised that the police are committed to registering cases for any genuine offences.

ASP Shehrbano Naqvi invited any families with a legitimate victim to come forward.

She assured them that the police would not shy away from registering an FIR if warranted.

Following her video on cyberbullying, the netizens remain unconvinced.

A user stated: “Wow! She is surprised that women are bullying her because she, being a woman, is not helping another woman but being part of a propaganda.”

One said: “Your acting skills are improving with every passing day. Consider changing your profession.”

Another wrote: “Just do your job and stop acting like a motivational speaker or influencer. That too for others.

“Really, you should indeed fear such actions.”
