“It’s not me, it’s not her. What is marriage?"
Arjun Rampal delved into why he and his girlfriend Gabriella Demetriades are not married despite being together for five years and having two sons, Arik and Arav.
In a recent interview, Arjun was asked why he and Gabriella had not tied the knot even though they have a family.
The actor replied: “What is marriage?”
Arjun spoke on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast about how marriage changes people and their attitudes towards each other shift.
He said: “It’s not me, it’s not her. What is marriage? It’s a piece of paper, after all. I think we are already married, and there is no doubt in my mind about that.
“But sometimes, that piece of paper can also change you. It’s like you think it’s permanent.
“It’s a false notion, in fact, but you are just legally bound.”
Arjun Rampal mentioned how couples change once married and that he did not want to jinx his relationship by speaking about it publicly.
He added: “It could change your attitude towards each other. I think that’s how we both feel. Whatever happened between us was very organic.
“I don’t want to speak much about it because I don’t want to jinx it. I don’t think I need to justify this to anybody.
“For us, this is beautiful. You should keep experiencing it for as long as you can. In both our minds, we are married to each other.
“We are both pushing each other in the right direction and at the same time, we are boyfriend-girlfriend.”
Arjun was previously married to Mehr Jesia. Admitting he got married too young, he said:
“I got married when I was 24, and I think it’s too early. You’re too young, and there’s a lot to learn and experience.”
“You have to become mature. Guys mature far slower than women do. It’s a proven fact that we are idiots.
“If you want to be successful in it (marriage), wait it out.”
The couple were married for over 20 years before getting divorced in 2019.
Arjun and Mehr share two daughters, Mahikaa and Myra, and he highlighted:
“Today, we are all very close and loving towards each other.”
On the work front, Arjun Rampal is set to star in Aditya Dhar’s new untitled movie alongside Ranveer Singh and Sanjay Dutt. Filming has reportedly already begun in Thailand.
