"That’s when this journey started.”
In a sport where representation remains limited, Arjun Banerjee is determined to redefine expectations.
The 18-year-old Indian American Quarterback from California High School in San Ramon has already built a reputation as a leader, competitor, and trailblazer.
Recruited by Whitworth University, the 2025 Northwest Conference Co-Champions with a flawless 7–0 conference record and an 8-3 overall finish, he is set to begin the next chapter of his journey in Autumn 2026.
Driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence, Banerjee aims to become the first Indian American Quarterback to start at the college level.
Guided by a family legacy rooted in academic and professional achievement, he has embraced a mindset centred on discipline, resilience, and ambition.
As his story gains recognition, Banerjee’s rise signals a powerful shift in both representation and possibility within American football.
In an exclusive interview with DESIblitz, he reflects on his journey, cultural identity, and aspirations for the future.
From Discovery to Quarterback Dreams

Arjun Banerjee’s introduction to American football began with his father and quickly evolved into a defining passion.
While other sports failed to capture his interest, the intensity and spectacle of the NFL left a lasting impression.
He recalls: “I first got into American football partly because of my dad. When I was younger, I tried out many sports like tennis, soccer, etc, but I was just very uninterested and came off as boring to me.
“Then my dad showed me an NFL game one Sunday, and I just fell in love with it. The atmosphere, the adrenaline pump just from watching, the way the game was played itself.”
His early experiences in flag football helped him develop essential skills and confidence, as he explains:
“I started off playing flag football where I mostly played receiver or defensive positions, but I could always throw the ball pretty far.
“I switched to real tackle football after that, playing for my local Pop Warner team, The San Ramon Bears, and one day I was throwing before practice just playing catch with my teammates, and a coach came early and saw me throwing and really liked what he saw, so that’s when they switched me to Quarterback.
“That’s when this journey started.”
The moment marked a turning point, setting him on a path defined by leadership, discipline, and ambition.
Leadership and Defining High School Moments

Arjun Banerjee’s influence peaked at California High School, where he became team captain. The honour reflected his leadership qualities and the trust he commanded among teammates and coaches.
He says: “It was amazing to lead my team; being named the team captain meant everything to me.
“I loved leading my team through the tunnel knowing that they have my back and I have theirs in every situation.”
For Banerjee, leadership began long before matchday, forged through shared sacrifices during the offseason.
He explains: “That connection starts at the start of the offseason, making sure you meet every new teammate, and then the process of training together and being tired together and celebrating together, the bond that creates is unbreakable.
“I earned that role because I think of how much my team looked up to me and came to me for problems and I think it’s because I feel like I lead with a good mix of vocal and leading by example.”
One defining moment came against crosstown rivals San Ramon Valley High School.
Banerjee recalls: “One moment on the field I would say when my leadership made a difference was our game against our crosstown rival, San Ramon Valley High School.
“Going into that game, we hadn’t beaten them for the past 17 years.”
“So it started in that week of practice, emphasising every day that we had the chance to change history. Right before the game, since we had prepared so well during the week, this is the most ready we’d ever felt.”
His performance embodied resilience and determination.
Banerjee says: “It was a tough game at the start, but I was putting my body on the line and diving for more yards, throwing the ball effectively all across the field, leading by example and on the sidelines when the defence was on the field, I was rallying the sideline to cheer for our team.
“We ended up pulling of the win for the first time in 17 years and my coach’s history.”
Cultural Identity and Work Ethic

Arjun Banerjee credits his Bengali heritage for shaping his mindset and approach to competition. His upbringing instilled discipline, resilience, and a commitment to excellence.
He explains: “I think my cultural background shaped my approach on football, showing how much work I put in the sport and how much time I put in on not necessarily the on the field stuff like throwing and running and etc.”
Inspired by his family’s sacrifices, he views hard work as non-negotiable.
Banerjee continues: “My culture being Bengali, I’ve seen how hard my parents and grandparents worked to make it in this world, the roots that they set for me when I was a child, I think have set me up for success in the future, the constant work ethic and perseverance that I have comes from my parents and grandparents.”
As an Indian American Quarterback, Arjun Banerjee acknowledges the challenges of limited representation in the sport:
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced is that there hasn’t been anyone like me before. Anyone from my ethnicity and heritage to make it this far in this sport.
“That being said, college coaches haven’t seen anyone like me before.
“In some instances, my ethnicity can be an advantage in being unique to the game, but it also makes college coaches unsure about me, even though I have the abilities to play at the next level.”
Despite this, he embraces the responsibility of representation.
He states: “It means everything to me.
“Knowing that may seem like a lot to carry on myself, I welcome it because I know that I am changing the culture and showing that in a sport that generally hasn’t seen an Indian player before, and as a Quarterback, it can be done.
“I just want to show everyone that just because it hasn’t been seen or done before, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be the first to do it. Change the culture.”
Composure under Pressure and NFL Aspirations

Arjun Banerjee’s commitment to Whitworth University marks the next phase of his American football journey. The programme’s winning culture and supportive environment played a decisive role in his decision.
He says: “Playing for Whitworth excites me the most because of how much I love the coaching staff and how they’ve been a winning programme for several years, which really tells something about the coaching staff and how much the players buy in to the programme in the offseason and the community that it makes, I could see myself making lifelong friendships at Whitworth.”
His composure under pressure has become a defining trait.
Coach Danny Calcagno described him as “ice cold,” a reputation earned through standout performances.
Banerjee recalls: “One instance that demonstrated me being ‘ice cold’ per se was our 3rd game of the season against a team called Monterey Trail.
“First half of the game, we were slow on offence, and by the end of the half, we were down 28-7. In the locker room during halftime, I gave my team a speech and rallied them.
“The first play of the 2nd half, my coach wanted to run the ball. I said no we have to set the tone of this half right now. So I called a pass and I threw a long ball for a touchdown on the first play back.”
Maintaining composure in the closing moments, he secured a memorable comeback.
Banerjee says: “With 2 minutes left in the game, it was 35-35 tie score. And we just got the ball, but I wasn’t scared; I stayed calm, cool, and collected.
“I marched down the field and threw a long ball to my number one receiver, Luke Taylor, for the game-winning score.”
Looking ahead, Banerjee remains focused on reaching the pinnacle of the sport.
He adds: “I would love to pursue the NFL in the future; that would be a dream come true. I would love nothing more than to be under the big lights.
“And being the first Indian American Quarterback to play at that level would be amazing and I could see myself in that position someday.
“That is always the end goal in mind, and I will put my head down and grind to make it as far as possible in the sport that I love.”
Arjun Banerjee’s journey reflects a blend of talent, determination, and cultural pride that continues to shape his ambitions.
From leading California High School as team captain to preparing for Whitworth University, each milestone underscores his commitment to excellence and growth.
Supported by coaches, teammates, and a family that values hard work above all, he stands poised to challenge long-standing barriers in the sport.
As he pursues college success and sets his sights on the NFL, Banerjee carries with him the hopes of a community eager to see new ground broken.
His mission remains clear: to prove that history is not fixed, but written by those bold enough to change it.
