"I was meant to be in front of the camera."
Actress Alia Bhatt has addressed the ongoing conversation about her privileged background and her journey to Bollywood stardom.
The daughter of ace filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has long been a subject of discussion regarding her advantages in the industry.
She has also been mentored by Bollywood’s biggest filmmaker and producer Karan Johar, further fuelling conversations about her position.
In a recent interview, Alia openly acknowledged the debate surrounding her privilege and addressed how it has shaped her.
She admitted that she wanted to be an actor from a very young age, much like many other aspiring performers.
“The truth is I’ve been acting in front of my mirror since childhood.
“I only had one dream in my mind, that I wanted to be on television one day.”
She recalled watching classic songs featuring actors like Govinda and Karisma Kapoor during her formative years.
She admitted that she always wondered about the magic of movies and what made them so captivating to audiences.
“Since then, I have believed that I was meant to be in front of the camera.”
However, Alia does acknowledge and recognise the substantial privilege she has gained from coming from a film family background.
She said: “I’ve had a very different journey, and I do acknowledge that when you come from a place of privilege, it’s easy to say that.”
Alia went further, explaining that acknowledging privilege does not erase the struggles that come with pursuing acting as a career.
“But I say this even coming from a place of privilege — sometimes you still have those bad days, you still have those low days.”
She emphasised that during those difficult moments, the only thing an aspiring actor can do is believe in themselves.
“The only thing you can tell yourself is that I’m allowed to dream, and I’m allowed to believe in myself.”
While acknowledging the doors that privilege opens, she also recognises that hard work and self-belief remain essential regardless of background.
Alia is currently busy promoting her next big film, a major spy thriller for Yash Raj Films.
Alpha marks her appearance in the latest instalment of YRF’s highly successful and expanding Spy Universe franchise.
The film also stars Sharvari and Bobby Deol in lead roles, with Anil Kapoor rounding out the main cast.
Bobby plays the antagonist role in the film, positioning him opposite Alia’s character in the central conflict.
The makers recently unveiled the film’s trailer, which revealed a significant surprise for fans of the spy universe franchise.
Hrithik Roshan will make a cameo appearance as Major Kabir from the films War and War 2, respectively.
That cameo has already generated considerable excitement among audiences who are invested in the interconnected spy universe storylines.
Alpha is the latest instalment in Yash Raj Films’ Spy Universe, which has grown significantly over the past several years.
Other films in the franchise include Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, Tiger 3 and War 2.
