The popular drama serial Guru came to an end on December 18, 2023, in an emotional episode which saw the demise of the titular character.
The episode was full of emotions as Mariam (Hira Khan) finally came face to face with her birth mother and told her she needed to stay with her sick father.
Mariam also reunited with her biological father and introduced herself as his daughter, proving it by showing him a gold chain he had given to the nurse so she could put it on his baby post-birth.
During the episode, Guru’s health deteriorates and a heart-to-heart between him and Mariam sees him advise her to go to her mother’s house.
But she refuses and says her place is with him.
In Guru’s final moments, fans were moved to tears when he reminisced about his life with Mariam.
As he dies, he holds a photograph of her as a child cutting a birthday cake.
The heartbreaking end prompted fans to comment on their grief.
One individual said: “I cried during the bathing scene of Guru after his death. Guru’s bond with Surraiya was amazing.”
Another said: “As an American, I watched this show out of pure curiosity.
“Even though I don’t know this language that well, the story stuck out to me for this. I hope this wins an Oscar one day! Great show Pakistan!”
A third added: “Mind-blowing acting by Ali Rehman Khan and the whole drama cast. There has never been a better last episode. It made me cry.”
Fans have also said that Ali Rehman Khan should be given an award for his stellar performance in the lead role.
During a previous appearance on Mazaaq Raat, host Imran Ashraf had asked Ali if anyone had tried to dissuade him from taking on a transgender role.
Ali replied: “I see my seniors and colleagues and my fellow actors who have done good work.
“They’ve done very daring roles and that pleases me.
“I get pleased. If one should get a role like this the actor inside says I must do this now, I can do this.
“But what you said, there are many voices in the industry who say that you’re a hero. People said no.
“They scared me and obviously, you tend to listen to others.”
“But then I think there were also those voices that were very supportive and they told me that this is your destiny. This is your identification.”
Ali went on to say that to fully understand the challenging role, he spent a considerable amount of time with the intersex community so that he could do justice to his character.
Guru centres on the intersex community who change their image to look after an abandoned baby girl left outside their house.
The drama successfully highlights the struggles and tribulations the intersex community faces as they try to fit into a normal world and make an honest earning for themselves.
Guru has been directed by Bilawal Hussain Abbasi.
It also stars Zhalay Sarhadi, Hira Khan, Mohsin Ejaz and Umer Alam.
