"This one seems to be very okay sitting on the area"

An Indian woman living in Dubai sparked a social media debate after she shared a video of herself complaining about her maid “slouching” on the sofa and using her phone.

The woman, Anamika Rana, also admitted she was confused about setting boundaries with her employee.

In the video, she explained: “I just caught my maid on the camera.

“She was literally slouching like this and kind of like chilling on her phone or something on the sofa.”

Acknowledging the generational gap, she added:

“I know a lot of y’all might think that so what big deal.

“See, I am a millennial and perhaps my maid is a Gen Z and we both are from different generations. And also, I am not very pro at maid handling.”

Anamika admitted her uncertainty about how to set boundaries especially because her maid is new to the job.

“This one seems to be very okay sitting on the area and on the bed sometimes.

“I am not sure how to react because she’s good at her work and she’s also a fairly new hire.”

Seeking advice from social media users, she asked:

“Am I overreacting or should I tell her politely not to sit on the sofa etc?”

The video went viral and sparked a debate, with some criticising her for overreacting while others provided suggestions.

One wrote: “Well when she isn’t working why can’t she be checking her phone sitting on your sofa? She can’t be expected to work all hours.

“She isn’t a slave, but a maid who is also human.

“If you don’t know your own boundaries then you’re not fit to set boundaries for others.”

Another said: “Our maid sits with us on our sofa and has breakfast sometimes.

“We are ok with it as we don’t like to discriminate against people based on their job and social status. Also, she does good work in a timely fashion.”

Hitting out at Anamika, a user said:

“Got nothing to do with being a millennial and Gen Z, it’s just you overreacting wanting to preserve the old ways of thinking.

“Girl, this person is cleaning and maintaining your home, let her sit for a while. It’s not that deep.”

On the other hand, one person pointed out:

“You’re not wrong to overreact. Just tell her politely. Set the limits.”

Another shared: “Sofa is ok because that’s where people sit (otherwise where’s she gonna sit) but the bed isn’t ok.”
