"It’s Sunny Deol who would be synonymous with Hanuman."
It is rumoured that Sunny Deol has been cast in the role of Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s cinematic adaptation of the Indian epic Ramayan.
The adaptation is said to be of epic proportion and grand scale, spanning three parts.
Ranbir Kapoor is set to lead the cast as Ram, while Sai Pallavi will star opposite him as Sita.
South star Yash will be seen as the antagonist Ravan and Lara Dutta has reportedly been roped in as Ram’s stepmother Queen Kaikeyi.
Vijay Sethupathi is also apparently in talks with the makers for the role of Vibhishan, Ravan’s younger brother.
A report in Pinkvilla delved into Sunny’s casting in the legacy role. It explained:
“While Ramayan: Part One features Sunny Deol in a guest appearance, the second and third parts of the epic trilogy will have his complete presence.
“The makers are confident that after Dara Singh, it’s Sunny Deol who would be synonymous with Hanuman in modern times.”
However, some fans reacted negatively to the casting coup given Sunny is over 25 years older than Ranbir.
The report continued to state:
“It’s a legacy part, and the teams are unfazed by the social media chatter.
“Ranbir has the utmost respect for Sunny Deol, and the latter considers Ranbir to be one of the finest actors in Indian Cinema.
“The dynamic shared by the two will be a treat for audiences on the big screen.
“The idea is to bring to spectacle the pure bond shared by Ram and Hanuman.”
Over his career which has spanned over four decades, Sunny Deol has consistently proven his worth as an action hero.
He has amazed with brute force in films such as Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993), and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001).
Hanuman is a central character in Ramayan. He is one of the prime protagonists and in the epic, he uses power and bravery to defeat his opponents.
Therefore, Sunny in the role of Hanuman appears to be terrifically apt casting.
It was recently also reported that Sunny’s brother Bobby Deol had approached to play Kumbhkaran in the planned trilogy.
However, the actor’s team denied the speculation.
The first instalment of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayan will reportedly commence filming in March 2024.
Filming will continue until July 2024, after which the makers are purported to invest a year and a half in post-production.
On the work front, Sunny will next be seen in Rajkumar Santoshi’s Lahore, 1947.
It will mark his first collaboration with Aamir Khan who serves as producer of the film.
He will also star in the upcoming Safar.
Sunny Deol was last seen in Gadar 2 (2023), in which he reprised his iconic role of Tara Singh.
