Will Karan Johar’s ‘Kill’ revive the Action Genre?

There are high expectations for the action thriller from legendary producer Karan Johar. But will it revive Bollywood’s action genre?

"People don't know what's coming their way."

The film Kill, an action-thriller from legendary producer Karan Johar, excites early viewers and film reviewers.

It was released in cinemas in the UK and US on July 5, 2024. There is enormous anticipation that it will be a box office success.

Kill, directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, marks Lakshya Lalwani’s Bollywood debut. It also stars TV personality and choreographer Raghav Juyal.

Karan Johar, best known for adored Bollywood films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, has taken on his biggest project with this film.

Karan’s company, Dharma Productions, teamed up with documentarian Oscar-winner Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment and Lionsgate.

Lakshya Lalwani’s character takes centre stage within the action-thriller set on a train.

After a screening of the film Kill, Vicky Kaushal posted on his Instagram Story:

“What a film! I tip my hat off to each and everyone involved in making this film.

“People don’t know what’s coming their way.”

Siddhant Adlakha, reviewing the film for Mashable, stated:

“Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s locomotive action thriller isn’t just viscerally effective, it’s also wildly original.

“Set aboard a long-distance sleeper train, its politically charged, close-quarters mayhem has the potential to propel mainstream Hindi cinema fearlessly forward […]”

The positive and enthusiastic reviews continue to roll in with Metro columnist Asyia Iftikhar having asserted:

“The movie is packed with complex, jaw-dropping action sequences, graphic gore and intense emotional beats that drive the plot and keep the audience’s heart pounding throughout.”

Imran talking to DESIblitz showed his excitement to watch the film:

“The film looks sick, my mates and me will be watching on the weekend.

“We’ve all been waiting. Going to be epic.”

Over the years Bollywood cinema has continued to sweep the world, gaining more and more popularity. Kill may propel that popularity further.

Moreover, this film could add a new lease of life to the action genre, across film industries.

Plans for a Hollywood remake reflect the promise and high expectations for the film.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski and his production company are producing an English-language remake for Lionsgate.

In a statement, he said:

Kill is one of the most vivid, wild, and creative action movies I’ve seen recently.

“Nikhil delivers relentless action sequences that need to be seen by as wide an audience as possible.

“It’s exciting to be developing an English-language version — we have big shoes to fill and I’m looking forward to working with Nikhil, Karan, Apoorva, Guneet, and Achin to achieve that.”
