"Ruined a perfect track."

The makers of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, featuring Varun Dhawan, have dropped a recreated version of ‘Chunnari Chunnari.’

The revamped track features Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur grooving to the updated version of the beloved classic.

The original ‘Chunnari Chunnari’ was picturised on Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen in the 1999 film Biwi No. 1 and remains iconic.

That version featured vocals by Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Anuradha Sriram, with music composed by the celebrated Anu Malik.

The recreated version has been arranged by Akshay Raheja and Abhishek Singh, with choreography handled by the renowned Remo D’Souza.

It has been sung by IP Singh, Jonita Gandhi, Asees Kaur, Sudhir Yaduvanshi and Anuradha Sriram, who also featured on the original track.

Rather than winning over audiences as an instant crowd favourite, the remake has triggered a considerable wave of criticism online.

Social media users have been vocal and largely unsparing in their verdict, with many accusing Bollywood of relying too heavily on nostalgia.

One X user called the song: “More nostalgia bait than a fresh chartbuster.”

Another user was far less measured in their reaction to hearing the remake of the beloved and deeply remembered original track:

“No, OG Chunnari Chunnari was so good. Not every song needs a remake. Ruined a perfect track.”

Another comment read: “The original made you want to get up and dance instantly. This one somehow does the opposite.”

One user even joked that the remake had sent him straight back to the original, which he had since listened to at least ten times.

Not every reaction was entirely negative, however, with some viewers finding merit in Varun Dhawan’s energy and commitment to the track.

“New version Chunnari Chunnari is good. No doubt. But the old one is not just a song.

“It’s a memory. It’s nostalgic. It’s an emotion.

“Varun Dhawan is doing a fabulous job. But Salman Khan’s swag is literally unbeatable.”

Another reaction, however, described the remake simply and without hesitation as “cringe.”

The song’s release also arrived with a slice of entertaining industry drama that played out very publicly at a recent high-profile event.

At the David Dhawan Film Festival hosted by PVR INOX, both David Dhawan and Varun were present when Salman Khan made a memorable appearance.

Salman could not resist taking a playful and very public jab at Varun over the recreation of yet another song from his own catalogue.

He told the audience with his characteristic humour: “He picked up another one of my songs.”

Varun responded with visible embarrassment and a smile, replying simply: “Brother, leave it.”

The audience erupted in laughter at this viral exchange.

This is not the first time Varun Dhawan has appeared in a recreated version of a song originally associated with Salman Khan.

Varun Dhawan has previously featured in remakes of ‘Chalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12’ and ‘Oonchi Hai Building.’
