A suicide note was reportedly recovered.

Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta passed away after allegedly falling from the terrace of a residential building in Kolkata.

The incident took place in the Hindustan Park area of the city and sent shockwaves through the Bengali film industry.

He was rushed to a private hospital in Dhakuria in a critically injured and deteriorating condition following the fall from the building.

Doctors at the hospital declared him dead, with reports suggesting he had passed away before he could even reach the medical facility.

He was found outside the four-storey building in a bloodied condition with severe injuries to his head, waist, arms and legs.

Police from the Gariahat police station are currently investigating the incident, and the case is also being handled by Kolkata Police’s homicide department.

A suicide note was reportedly recovered from the terrace of the apartment building where the fall is said to have taken place.

Police confirmed that the director had been suffering from depression for a considerable period and was taking medication for anxiety as well.

Officials said Anik Dutta had visited his estranged wife’s residence in Hindustan Park before the tragedy unfolded.

It remains unclear what exactly transpired in the time leading up to the fall from the terrace of the building.

Police currently suspect the incident to be a case of suicide, though the investigation remains ongoing and no conclusions have been drawn.

Dutta’s body has been sent for a postmortem examination, and his last rites are reportedly scheduled for May 28, 2026.

The filmmaker’s personal life had been going through a deeply difficult period in the years leading up to his death.

After nearly 25 years of marriage, Anik Dutta and his wife, Sandhi Dutta, had reportedly separated and were undergoing divorce proceedings.

He had been living alone at his Gariahat apartment while his wife stayed at her separate residence in the Hindustan Park area.

Reports of marital problems had surfaced in 2025, though Dutta had consistently chosen not to speak about the reasons behind the separation.

The filmmaker had also reportedly been hospitalised a few months ago due to serious heart-related complications.

Beyond the personal struggles, Anik Dutta was a filmmaker of considerable reputation and lasting significance within Bengali cinema throughout his career.

The loss leaves a significant void in the Bengali film industry.

Friends, admirers and industry peers have been expressing their grief and disbelief across social media since the news broke.
