“We have received inquiries from around the world"
The US authorities addressed widespread reports that notorious gangster Goldy Brar was shot dead in California.
Several Indian media outlets said a shooting happened on April 30, 2024, in Fairmont and Holt Avenue, Fresno.
It was reported that Brar and one of his aides were standing outside a property when they were attacked by unknown assailants.
The attackers opened fire and fled the scene.
Both men were taken to hospital and one died due to their injuries.
According to reports, Brar was the fatality.
It was believed to have been a case of gang rivalry, with Arsh Dalla and Lakhbir claiming responsibility for the attack, citing longstanding animosity.
The reports went viral and Brar’s name trended on social media, especially given that he claimed responsibility for the death of singer Sidhu Moose Wala.
During an interview, Brar said Sidhu’s alleged role in the killing of Lawrence Bishnoi’s associate Vicky Midukhera, compelled him to carry out the crime.
However, the reports stated that official confirmation was awaited.
Fresno Police have now responded to the murder reports, saying they are “untrue”.
Lieutenant William J Dooley said: “If you are inquiring because of the online chatter claiming that the shooting victim is ‘Goldy Brar’, we can confirm that this is absolutely not true.”
Calling the reports “misinformation”, Lieutenant Dooley said the police department is receiving inquiries from around the world.
He said: “We have received inquiries from around the world this morning as a result of misinformation being spread on social media and online news agencies.
“We are not sure who started this rumour, but it caught on and spread like wildfire.
“But again, it isn’t true. The victim is definitely not Goldy.”
The individual killed in the shooting has reportedly been identified as 37-year-old Xavier Galdney.
Officers responded to the shooting at 5:30 pm local time after receiving a ShotSpotter activation.
Police arrived at the scene and found Galdney with a gunshot wound.
He was taken to Community Regional Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead.
A 13-year-old was also taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening wound.
Fresno Police Lieutenant Paul Cervantes said the teenager was at the location where shots were fired.
Homicide detectives have identified the alleged shooter as 33-year-old Darren Williams.
Lieutenant Cervantes said a warrant has been issued for Williams’ arrest on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
He added that the motive is a gang-related interpersonal dispute.
