"using that image for vulgar, sexualised moves is not artistic expression"

Canadian rapper Tommy Genesis has sparked outrage for dressing as the Hindu goddess Kali Ma in the music video for her song ‘True Blue’.

The video immediately triggered backlash across social media.

Viewers accused the artist of cultural appropriation and disrespecting religious sentiments.

Critics were particularly offended by her portrayal of Kali Ma, which included blue body paint, a red bindi, gold jewellery, and a bikini.

One user wrote: “This is blasphemy. It has become fashion to hurt Hindu sentiments. Even she knows no one will object.”

In the video, the rapper is seen wearing a gold maang tikka, bangles, and high heels, performing suggestive moves.

Tommy was also seen licking a crucifix and posing in a namaste. The presence of Christian symbolism alongside her portrayal of a Hindu deity led to further criticism.

On X, one person wrote: “Somehow you’ve managed to offend Christians and Hindus in the same video. Achievement.”

Another said: “She not only mocked Christianity but also Hinduism and Indian culture. Shameless.”

Born Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, the rapper caused further outrage on Instagram.

In a promotional image, Tommy appeared to be topless whilst dressed as the goddess.

As a result, she faced accusations of sexualising the deity for the purposes of her music video.

One person called her “disgusting”, while one lengthy comment read:

“This is beyond disrespectful. Depicting yourself as Goddess Kali, one of the most powerful and sacred deities in Hinduism, and then using that image for vulgar, sexualised moves is not artistic expression; it’s straight-up cultural and religious mockery.

“You may not realise the depth of what you’re doing, but for millions of people, Kali is a symbol of fierce protection, divine feminine power, and spiritual strength, not your costume for shock value.

“You wouldn’t dare to sexualise figures from other major religions in this way because you know the backlash would be instant. So why do it to Hinduism?”

Indian artist Raftaar voiced his disapproval on Instagram Stories, calling the video a “mockery” of his religion. He urged his followers to report the video on YouTube.

Raftaar also shared a screenshot of his report, writing: “Report This.”

In the submission, he stated:

“This is a mockery of my religion. This shouldn’t exist.”

Tommy Genesis is of Malayali, Tamil and Swedish descent.

She has previously been described as “the internet’s most rebellious underground rap queen” by Dazed magazine. Her song ‘True Blue’ is part of her upcoming album Genesis.

The video continues to draw criticism online, with many calling for platforms to take action.
