“In my enthusiasm and all the noise and crowd, it just slipped out."
Tabish Hashmi has frequently faced criticism for his adult jokes, which many consider inappropriate.
One such instance was his joke with Mariyam Nafees, which went viral and sparked a backlash. He had asked Mariyam if her husband could not “perform”.
Tabish appeared on Hafiz Ahmed’s podcast, where he addressed the controversy surrounding the joke.
He described the incident as an “embarrassing moment” and acknowledged that he should have exercised self-control and refrained from cracking the joke.
Tabish said: “In my enthusiasm and all the noise and crowd, it just slipped out.
“It was a wrong thing to say and it is something I think that I should not have said.”
He also revealed that Mariyam Nafees is a close friend, and they share a playful bond. However, it sometimes leads to jokes that might be considered offensive.
Tabish further explained that Mariyam’s husband is also a good friend and he values their friendship.
However, he realised that some things should remain personal and not be made public.
He mentioned that he had asked Mariyam if he should address the controversy, but she told him to let it go.
She said: “I’m chill about it, you don’t have to clarify it.”
Social media users still criticised him over his joke.
A user said: “Unfortunately Tabish has no control of his mouth. He should follow a script.”
Another added: “This is a grown man who is accepting that he can not watch his mouth? You are not a little kid. Do not justify your mistakes.”
One questioned: “So he means to say that Mariyam and Tabish make inappropriate jokes with each other off-air?
“What kind of a shameless husband allows his wife to do that?”
Another wrote: “His words have not only made his image worse but it has also tainted Mariyam’s image. There is no respect for people who have such a dirty mind.”
One commented:
“Such third-class people. Joke or not, nothing like this should ever be said on television. Especially to a woman.”
