“For me, this is only the beginning"
Sushant Shekhar has been cast as the male lead in My Indian Boyfriend: The Golden Mile, Vijay Chauhan’s UK remake of a Hong Kong romance film.
The production also unveiled its wider supporting cast during the Cannes Film Market.
A graduate of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama’s MA Acting (Contemporary) programme, Sushant also trained at the Fontainebleau School of Acting.
In his feature film debut, he will play Krishna, a British-Indian dancer balancing family expectations with his own ambitions.
The London-based actor’s previous stage credits include Indian Ink, directed by Jonathan Kent, as well as Sophia with Eastern Angles.
Sushant told Variety: “I’m deeply grateful to everyone involved in the production for entrusting me with the opportunity to portray Krishna.
“Opportunities like this are truly rare in an actor’s journey, and I’m committed to approaching this collaboration with great care, respect, and intention alongside such an incredible team of creatives.
“For me, this is only the beginning, and my entire focus is now on the work ahead.”
Jolene Tiong, who was confirmed as the female lead, will star as Jasmine, an architecture graduate whose relationship with Krishna develops over a transformative summer in Leicester during the city’s Diwali celebrations.
Malaysian actor Chacko George Vadaketh has joined the production as Krishna’s father.
Represented by Fly Entertainment, Chacko has worked across film, television, theatre and live events in Malaysia, Singapore and the United States.
His television credits include The Bold and the Beautiful and Strike Back, while his film work includes The Assistant.
The supporting ensemble also includes Adryne Caulder-James, Jennifer Jade and Arun Sharma.
Executive producer Hiu Man Chan told Variety:
“Due to the project’s local/global ambition, the casting was carefully crafted rather than through a conventional process.”
“We are very pleased to have found Sushant after endless nights of internet surfing – he IS our Krishna!”
Hiu Man Chan is joined on the executive producer team by Amita Krishna, Djonny Chen and Sri Kishore.
Amita and Djonny previously worked on High Wire, which starred Isabella Wei of 1899 fame.
Sri Kishore also wrote and directed the original Hong Kong version of the film.
