Remarks made by Mandhira caused 'serious reputational harm'
The legal battle over the massive estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur has had a major update.
The Patiala House Court recently addressed a criminal defamation complaint filed by Sunjay’s widow against his sister Mandhira.
Priya Kapur initiated this legal action in January 2026, citing ‘personal attacks’ and public harassment on various digital platforms today.
The court heard arguments regarding an application moved by Mandhira seeking the production of specific documents from the complainant.
Mandhira Kapur Smith appeared before the court and filed her formal reply to the ongoing criminal defamation complaint.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Siddhant Sihag presided over the preliminary arguments regarding the production of these various legal papers.
Advocate Amit Prasad argued that ‘the alleged defamatory words should not be viewed in isolation’ during the court proceedings.
Senior Advocate Maninder Singh represented Priya and claimed the application was not maintainable at this current stage of litigation.
He specifically noted that the matter is currently at the stage of notice and not at the stage of charge.
Singh stated that he does not wish to file a formal reply but reserves his right to argue.
The court has now listed the matter for further hearing and extensive arguments on the date of March 30, 2026.
Counsel for the proposed accused, Pooja Chaudhary, was granted time to file a formal reply to the pending application.
Priya previously stated that the remarks made by Mandhira caused ‘serious reputational harm’ to her personal and professional image.
The defamation suit claims that circulating material advances misleading narratives intended to malign and harass Priya.
Sunjay Kapur was the prominent chairman of Sona Comstar and was previously married to the actor Karisma Kapoor.
The businessman and the actor married in 2003 and had two children named Samaira and Kiaan, before their divorce.
Karisma and Sunjay finalised their separation in 2016, after which he married Priya Sachdev and had a son, Azarias.
The estate dispute intensified in August 2025 when Priya presented a document to the High Court claiming it was his will.
This specific document was challenged by Samaira and Kiaan, along with another individual named Rani, in the high court.
Some news reports suggest the assets of the late businessman could be worth as much as 30,000 crore rupees.
However, the children of Karisma Kapoor stated they were not actually aware of the true worth of the estate.
Singh argued that the documents sought by Mandhira relate to property and trusts already in the public domain.
He further mentioned that Mandhira Kapur is already aware of these matters, and they are not connected with the complaint.
The legal drama continues to unfold as both sides prepare for the upcoming hearing schedule.
