"This may come as a shock, but our journey is now shifting."

Just weeks before their wedding, longtime Indian-Pakistani couple Anjali Chakra and Sufi Malik announced their split.

The same-sex couple, who went viral for their New York photoshoot, had been together for five years.

They announced their split in separate Instagram statements, with it being revealed that Sufi had cheated on Anjali.

Anjali wrote: “Sufi and I have been blessed to spend the last five plus years together in a loving and beautiful partnership that we have been so honoured to share with all of you.”

She explained to fans that their “outpouring of love and support has played such a special part” in her relationship with Sufi and they will “continue to carry that love with us moving forward”.

Revealing that Sufi cheated on her, Anjali continued:

“This may come as a shock, but our journey is now shifting.

“We have decided to call off our wedding and end our relationship due to infidelity committed by Sufi.”

Anjali wished for “absolutely no negativity” to be directed towards her ex-fiancee and requested fans to “respect this difficult decision”.

She concluded: “What we have shared has been so full of love and nothing short of magical – I will choose to remember it this way.

“All my love, Anjali.”

Fans were shocked by the sudden announcement and expressed their sympathies.

One said: “Wtf girl? You deserve so much better.”

Another commented: “Cheating itself is crazy but cheating when you’re the one who proposed is extra insane.”

Others praised Anjali for her bravery in calling off her wedding.

Sufi posted her own statement where she admitted to cheating and expressed her regret at her actions.

Her post began: “Hey everyone, there has been a major turn of events in my relationship with Anjali.

“I made an unrecognisable mistake of betrayal by cheating on her a few weeks before our wedding.”

“I’ve hurt her tremendously, beyond my own understanding.

“I’m owning up to my mistake and will continue to do so. I understand the gravity of the situation and can only ask relentlessly for forgiveness, from Anjali and Allah.

“I’ve hurt the people I love and care about the most through my actions, including our family and friends; our community that I cherish.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us all these years, we owe everything to you all. We ask you all for privacy and respect at this time.

“With humility, Sufi.”

Her post had the comments turned off.
