“We’re excited to welcome Rishi back to Goldman Sachs.”

Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has joined Goldman Sachs as a senior advisor, marking a return to the bank where he began his career.

Sunak, who resigned as Prime Minister in July 2024, will work part-time advising clients on global politics and the economy. Goldman Sachs said he brings “unique perspectives and insights” to the role.

He remains the Conservative MP for Richmond and Northallerton in Yorkshire.

Goldman Sachs chairman and chief executive David Solomon said:

“We’re excited to welcome Rishi back to Goldman Sachs.”

He added that Sunak will also “spend time with our people around the world, contributing to our culture of ongoing learning and development”.

Sunak’s salary from the role will be donated to The Richmond Project.

The charity, launched earlier in 2025 by Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty, aims to improve numeracy skills across the UK.

The appointment has been reviewed by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba).

The watchdog said Sunak’s new position carries potential risks, including that Goldman Sachs could benefit from privileged access to information from his time in office.

As a condition of approval, Rishi Sunak is barred from advising other governments or their sovereign wealth funds.

He is also restricted from working with clients he had direct dealings with during his time as PM and is not allowed to lobby the UK government on behalf of the bank.

Acoba noted that Sunak had a long history in finance before entering politics.

He first joined Goldman Sachs as an intern in 2000, before working as an analyst between 2001 and 2004. He later co-founded an international investment firm.

Rishi Sunak was elected as an MP in 2015 and served as Boris Johnson’s chancellor during the Covid-19 pandemic. He became widely known for economic support schemes such as furlough.

His resignation in July 2022 helped trigger the collapse of Johnson’s government.

After Liz Truss’ short-lived tenure, Sunak became Prime Minister in October 2022 and led the Conservatives until their landslide defeat in July 2024.

The role at Goldman Sachs is the latest in a string of positions Sunak has taken since stepping down.

In January, he joined both the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He is not paid for either of those academic posts.

However, since April, Sunak has earned over £500,000 for three speaking engagements. Like many former Prime Ministers, he now gives talks at corporate events and dinners.
