Nineteen-year-old Punjabi artist Param has made history, becoming the first ever Indian female artist to reach number one on Spotify’s Global Viral Top 50 chart.
Her debut single ‘That Girl’, produced by British Punjabi producer Manni Sandhu, has captured listeners worldwide and positioned Param as a bold new voice in Punjabi music.
Released in September 2025 via Collab Creations, the track has become a viral sensation, blending raw emotion with lyrical honesty and Param’s powerful tone.
Within just eight days of its release, ‘That Girl’ amassed more than four million YouTube views, highlighting the song’s explosive popularity.
Its success marks a defining moment for Punjabi music and a milestone for South Asian women in the global hip-hop and rap scene.
Param, whose full name is Paramjeet Kaur, hails from Duneke village in Punjab’s Moga district.
Raised by a mother who works as house help and a father who is a daily-wage labourer, Param’s journey from rural Punjab to global recognition is nothing short of extraordinary.
Her breakthrough moment reflects resilience, authenticity and an unshakable sense of purpose that resonates deeply with a generation seeking representation and pride in their cultural identity.
The song itself was born in a modest Airbnb during Manni Sandhu’s recent visit to India.
“There was no expensive studio, no acoustic treatment — you could hear cars outside, but the vocals were extremely crisp. Within 10 minutes, the vibe was there,” Sandhu explained.
After capturing the raw vocals, he returned to the UK to refine the sound, while his friends Tru Makers, Dilsher Singh and Khurpal Singh shot the music video in Mohali, which has since gone viral online.
What distinguishes Param is her fearless delivery and refusal to conform to the expectations often placed on Punjabi women singers, who are typically confined to folk or pop.
In a male-dominated Punjabi rap landscape, she has emerged as a boundary-breaking lyricist and performer who writes, composes and raps with striking conviction.
Speed Records’ Satvinder Singh Kohli, who has previously launched the careers of Honey Singh and Satinder Sartaaj, described her as a trailblazer.
“There are many women singing pop music. But Param is unique. She is the first woman rapping in Punjabi in the ‘Gully Boy’ space,” he said.
Kohli added that her originality and grounded attitude suggest a long and promising career ahead.
Param’s collaborator and friend Jashanpreet Singh, also known as Saab, co-wrote parts of ‘That Girl’ and recalls her early passion for music.
The pair often performed freestyle sessions at Moga’s Dana Mandi grain market, a popular space for local hip-hop enthusiasts.
Their performances, frequently shared via Instagram and the page Malwa Hood, earned Param recognition for her sharp, melodic flow and commanding presence.
On her personal Instagram, she has long shared acoustic covers of artists like Sidhu Moosewala and Satinder Sartaaj, often filmed on her unplastered terrace.
These early videos revealed the raw talent and emotional honesty that now define her artistry.
Despite her growing fame, Param remains humble and deeply connected to her roots.
“I just want to support my family. I want to build a nice house for my parents so they can sit at home and relax,” she shared.
Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chart tracks the most shared and talked-about songs across social media platforms in over 60 countries.
