"George Michael is rolling in his grave.”
Priyanka Chopra is facing online trolling after unveiling her musical comeback, a Desi version of Wham!’s iconic track ‘Last Christmas’.
The track, which blends traditional Indian sounds with the festive spirit of the original, features in Gurinder Chadha’s upcoming film Christmas Karma.
The film releases in cinemas across the UK, Ireland, and the US on November 14, 2025.
Priyanka’s rendition has gone viral but has sparked a divided response.
Some praised her attempt to add a cultural twist.
One wrote: “Nice song.”
Another said: “OMG! Priyanka Chopra is back! Heart touching song. Go Desi Girl!”
However, many accused her of “ruining” the iconic song.
One Instagram user wrote: “She killed the song, and I mean literally murdered this beautiful song.”
Another commented: “The bhangra in between is sending me to Mars.”
A third asked bluntly: “Is this a parody?”
Upset at the Desi version, one person said: “George Michael is rolling in his grave.”
Many criticised the production quality, calling the song “overly auto-tuned” and questioning whether Priyanka’s vocals sounded authentic.
Even long-time fans expressed disappointment, as one comment read:
“I love her but no, just no.”
Another added: “Lip sync is bad, stop her please.”
One person even stated that they will not consider this an official song:
“I’ll consider this AI just to keep my sanity at peace.”
Amid the backlash, Priyanka Chopra appeared to post a subtle response on Instagram.
On November 8, she shared a story that read: “So many people have inspired me to be nothing like them.”
Despite the online trolling, the project itself has drawn attention for its star-studded soundtrack.
Alongside Priyanka Chopra, the Christmas Karma (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) features contributions from Gary Barlow, Billy Porter, Nitin Sawhney, Shaznay Lewis, Pixie Lott, and Boy George.
In a statement, Priyanka Chopra Jonas said:
“Gurinder Chadha is a dear friend and I am so happy to support her in my little way in Christmas Karma.”
“I hope this Desi twist to a song that has long been the soundtrack of Christmas for so many of us resonates with audiences.”
Gurinder Chadha added: “I am the biggest George Michael fan, and frankly, who isn’t, so I am very grateful to his estate for allowing us to put our own unique twist on his classic Christmas song.
“George loved Bend It Like Beckham and invited me for tea after he saw it. I hope he will enjoy this track in heaven and all his fans around the world will sing along to the catchy Hindi vibe!”
