Priyanka Chopra Jonas will be joined by Usher and Julianne Hough to host the newly-announced competition series ‘The Activist’.
Six activists will go head-to-head in challenges for five weeks to promote their causes, with their success measured via online engagement, social metrics, and hosts’ input.
The recently-announced show is facing severe backlash from both celebrities and netizens. Actress Jameela Jamil slammed the show.
Jameela tweeted her discontent, saying:
“Couldn’t they just give the money it’s going to take to pay this UNBELIEVABLY expensive talent and make this show, directly to activist causes? Rather than turning activism into a game and then giving a fraction of the much-needed money away in a “prize…?” People are dying.”
Many Twitter users have referred to the show, which is set to premiere in late October, as ‘tone-deaf’, ‘performative’ and ‘dystopian’ with one user comparing the show to The Hunger Games.
Participants will aim to attend the G20 Summit where they will meet with world leaders in the hope of securing funding.
The team that receives the biggest commitment is crowned the winner at the finale, which will feature performances by some of the world’s most passionate artists.
After the show received criticism, Global Citizen issued the following statement.
A spokesperson for the group said:
“The Activist spotlights individuals who’ve made it their life’s work to change the world for the better, as well as the incredible and often challenging work they do on the ground in their communities.
“This is not a reality show to trivialise activism. On the contrary, our aim is to support activists everywhere, show the ingenuity and dedication they put into their work, and amplify their causes to an even wider audience.”
Besides the show, Priyanka made headlines on September 9th for her appearance in the trailer of The Matrix Resurrections.
Although her role remains a mystery, she shared the screen with Keanu Reeves in the trailer.
It is rumoured that Priyanka might be taking on the role of Sati, the child who had been put under the Oracle’s care in the third Matrix film, The Matrix Revolutions.
Priyanka is currently in London, filming for her upcoming series Citadel. She stars alongside Game of Thrones’ and Eternals’ Richard Madden.
