“The push for global change is not a competition"

After facing severe backlash from netizens on social media, the reality show, The Activist has been changed to a different format..

The Activist will be a one-time documentary, rather than a five-episode competition series.

Priyanka Chopra was set to host the American network CBS show alongside Usher and Julienne Hough.

Both netizens and celebrities expressed their critical views about the show via social media. Many accused the show of being ‘performative’ and ‘dystopian.’

The original format would have seen six activists going head-to-head in challenges for five weeks to promote their causes.

However, the producers were left with no choice but to change the format of the reality show following the backlash. They issued the following statement:

“The Activist was designed to show a wide audience the passion, long hours, and ingenuity that activists put into changing the world, hopefully inspiring others to do the same.

“However, it has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day.

“The push for global change is not a competition and requires a global effort.”

They further added about the participants and the prize on offer:

“It will showcase the tireless work of six activists and the impact they have advocating for causes they deeply believe in.

“Each activist will be awarded a cash grant for the organisation of their choice, as was planned for the original show.”

They concluded the statement, saying:

“We hope that by showcasing their work we will inspire more people to become more involved in addressing the world’s most pressing issues.

“We look forward to highlighting the mission and lives of each of these incredible people.”

The organisation, Global Citizen, also made a statement, apologising for getting the show’s format “wrong.”

“Global activism centres on collaboration and cooperation, not competition.

“We apologise to the activists, hosts, and the larger activist community we got it wrong.”

“It is our responsibility to use this platform in the most effective way to realise change and elevate the incredible activists dedicating their lives to progress all around the world.”

The original show was set to premiere on October 22, 2021. A new release date is set to be announced in the coming days.

Filming is expected to begin from scratch for the new documentary. Priyanka Chopra is currently filming for her upcoming series Citadel in London.

She will also be seen in The Matrix: Resurrections alongside Keanu Reeves.

Ravinder is currently studying BA Hons in Journalism. She has a strong passion for all things fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. She also likes to watch films, read books and travel.
