“Asif has already two wives and now he has contracted a third marriage"
A Pakistani wife and her family attacked her husband after discovering that he tied the knot for the third time.
Madiha and her family turned up at the wedding reception in Sakhi Hassan Chowrangi, Karachi, on the night of February 10, 2020.
She shouted at her husband and told the guests that she was Asif Rafiq’s first wife, whom she had married in 2014.
Madiha alleged that Rafiq got married to another woman without her consent. When she found out about the second marriage, Rafiq apologised and promised to stay with her.
Madiha believed him and promised him, however, Rafiq left her at her maternal home and remarried for the third time.
At the wedding reception, Madiha and her family confronted the man and beat him, tearing his clothes. The attack left Rafiq fleeing and using a table cloth to cover himself up.
The police were informed about the incident and arrived at the scene. Asif was soon arrested and taken into custody.
The Pakistani wife and her family arrived at the police station but were told to leave after officers claimed that they were interrupting the investigation.
Officers were ordered to keep the media out of the police station.
Meanwhile, Madiha revealed her ordeal and also claimed that the police were providing security to Asif. She suspected that the police would release Rafiq after collecting a bribe.
She explained: “Asif has already two wives and now he has contracted a third marriage without any consent from them.”
Rafiq escaped after the police station’s gate was opened. However, his in-laws grabbed him and assaulted him.
Asif ended up taking refuge near a bus before he was rescued by local hotel staff.
According to Rafiq, he claimed that he divorced Madiha, adding that he does not require permission to remarry as he is not doing anything illegal.
He stated:
“It is my right to marry four women at the same time.”
Police officers said that they do not have the authority to take legal action as it is a civil dispute but said that Madiha and Asif can approach the court.
Madiha demanded legal action against her husband and his family for hiding the marriage.
Meanwhile, Asif has made a complaint against his first wife and her family for attacking him.
Police will register a case after a medical examination on Asif has been completed.
