"he is being arrested illegally and unlawfully"

London-based restaurateur Harman Singh Kapoor said he plans to take legal action against the Metropolitan Police and Sadiq Khan after his release from an “illegal arrest”.

The arrest is linked to tensions surrounding Kapoor’s non-halal restaurant.

Kapoor, who owns Rangrez, claimed he spent 24 hours in custody.

He wrote on X: “Released after 24 exhausting hours in custody following an illegal arrest, and straight back to work because my family still depends on me.”

The accompanying video featured Kapoor bringing groceries into his restaurant and thanking those who have supported him while also claiming he is being deliberately targeted by the authorities.

Kapoor alleged that he had been subjected to “unfair and continuous discriminatory treatment” and said he intended to pursue legal action against both the Metropolitan Police and the Mayor of London.

Kapoor also urged supporters to back his business directly instead of donating money online.

Encouraging people to dine at his restaurant, he added:

“I don’t want GoFundMe or handouts. I want to earn it.”

His wife Khushi defended him in a separate post, accusing authorities of repeatedly targeting her husband.

She wrote: “This loony toon @metpoliceuk and @MayorofLondon are scared of my husband @kingkapoor72 because he wanted to change London and make it habitable.

“Due to this, he is being arrested illegally and unlawfully again and again.”

Kapoor has divided online opinion with his Hammersmith restaurant, stating that it is non-halal and featuring the words “proudly we don’t sell Halal” on the front window.

Kapoor also actively shares posts that have divided social media users, including promoting the “non-Halal” aspect of his restaurant and alleged anti-Muslim sentiments.

This has caused controversy and it has led to him and his business being targeted.

In March 2026, things intensified when a crowd gathered outside the restaurant, blocking the entrance and shouting at Kapoor for his non-halal stance.

Footage showed the protesters outside while police officers were in and out of the restaurant to prevent things from turning violent.

At one point, Kapoor exited his business and challenged the protesters.

He also said he would be shutting down the business following months of disputes, protests and online backlash.

In a post on X, he claimed the closure was due to “rising costs, ongoing online harassment, repeated disturbances and attacks by Pakistanis, and a lack of proper support from the Met Police”.

Despite this, the restaurant remains open.
