"That's my promise to you."
Ruby Dhalla has vowed to deport every illegal immigrant living in Canada if she is elected as the next Prime Minister.
After Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, several political figures have announced their intention to run as Liberal Party leader.
Among those is Ruby Dhalla.
In a video message on X, Dhalla explained that there are “over half a million illegal immigrants in Canada. This is unacceptable”.
She acknowledged that immigrants helped build Canada but insisted that “we must clamp down on human trafficking and those that are here illegally”.
Dhalla wrote in the caption: “As Prime Minister, I will deport illegal immigrants and clamp down on human traffickers.
“That’s my promise to you.”
In another video message, Ruby Dhalla said:
“Thank you so much, thank you to God, I am so grateful to all of you.
“We are on the verge of creating history by electing the first woman of colour as the leader of the Liberal Party and the next Prime Minister of Canada.
“Phase 1 is over, we go on to phase 2 and engage with liberals all across the country, who have signed up as members of our party.
“I’m incredibly excited to be officially accepted as a candidate by the Liberal Party.
“My candidacy will engage an entirely new demographic of people into our party and into the Canadian political system.”
As Prime Minister, I will deport illegal immigrants and clamp down on human traffickers.
That’s my promise to you.

Her campaign team stated: “Dhalla made history as the first woman of Indian-origin elected as an MP for three terms and is now aiming to be the first Canadian Prime Minister of colour.”
Dhalla’s promise to deport every illegal immigrant in Canada sparked praise and criticism.
Showing their support, one person on X wrote:
“We are behind you and I will help you get elected.”
Another said: “Hell. Yeah.”
However, one wondered how such a promise would be possible:
“Where are we going to get the infrastructure?”
Another agreed: “The US barely has the infrastructure for this.
“We need a robust solution and how are we going to know that someone is here illegally I’m all for standing up against these human traffickers, but we need a robust system.”
Others posted racist messages to Dhalla, with one saying:
“You need to be deported.”
Another commented: “Go back to Bramladesh.”
Some even posted crude comments about her physical appearance and past modelling career.
One comment read: “Never going to happen just join OnlyFans honey.”
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Punjabi immigrants, Ruby Dhalla worked as a chiropractor and also was involved in acting before her political career.
She starred in the Bollywood-inspired film Kyon? Kis Liye?.
Ruby Dhalla was also the runner-up in the 1993 Miss India-Canada pageant.
Dhalla first caught media attention at the age of 10 when she wrote a letter to then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, expressing her thoughts on Operation Blue Star and the unrest in Punjab.
Gandhi personally responded to the young Dhalla and referenced her letter in a press conference.
Dhalla served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Brampton-Springdale constituency from 2004 to 2011.
She made history as the first Indian-origin woman to be elected to Canada’s Parliament for three consecutive terms.
Her promise is a bold one, especially as illegal immigration is a big issue in Canada.
