“Your recklessness or extremism is about to destroy that peace."
Mahfuj Alam, an adviser to the interim Bangladesh government, has issued a strong warning against mob action.
He emphasised that such actions would no longer be tolerated.
Alam declared that the government would deal with unlawful gatherings and violent protests with an “iron hand” moving forward.
Urging citizens to uphold order, he cautioned against taking justice into their own hands.
The advisor stated: “If you support the mass uprising, stop engaging in mob actions.
“If you engage in mob actions, you will also be treated as a devil.
“It is not your job to take the law into your own hands. From now on, we will firmly confront so-called movements and mob demonstrations.
“Any attempt to render the state ineffective and prove it to be a failure will not be tolerated in the slightest.”
Alam stressed that those who support the country’s new path toward stability should refrain from reckless actions that threaten law and order.
He reminded citizens that, for the first time in years, they had the freedom to practice their religion and culture in peace.
The advisor warned against jeopardising this newfound stability.
Alam said: “Your recklessness or extremism is about to destroy that peace.
“Refrain from oppression; otherwise, oppression against you will be inevitable.”
His warning comes amid growing tensions in Bangladesh following the recent political upheaval.
Previously, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus had also appealed for calm and discipline.
He asked citizens to restore law and order and avoid further attacks on properties linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
While acknowledging the deep anger of activists who had suffered under Hasina’s rule, Yunus emphasised that respecting the rule of law was essential.
He urged the public not to undermine the country’s security and stability through lawless behaviour.
The Bangladesh government remains vigilant against any attempts to destabilise the country.
Security forces are prepared to take immediate action against those inciting chaos or destruction.
Officials stress that any attacks on properties belonging to leaders of the former regime could give them an opportunity to seek international attention.
Bangladesh is currently navigating a delicate political transition following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government in July 2024.
The interim administration, led by Professor Yunus, is working to establish a system based on justice and accountability.
