"it wasn’t normal for fathers to leave after dinner"
Veteran actress Neena Gupta has opened up about how her mother once attempted to take her own life.
She also talked about her parent’s marriage, and how her mother felt after her father married another woman.
Neena revealed all in her autobiography Sach Kahun Toh, recently launched by Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan.
According to Neena Gupta, Sach Kahun Toh is an honest book about her life that discusses her highs and lows.
She talks about everything from her pregnancy to her successful Bollywood comeback.
In the autobiography, Neena Gupta also details her experiences as a child. She discusses her father’s absence in the house, and how her mother dealt with it.
Speaking of her parent’s relationship, Neena’s autobiography says:
“My father was brave enough to marry my mother for love.
“But he was also a dutiful son who couldn’t refuse when his father forced him to marry another woman from his community.”
Neena also wrote about how her father marrying another woman left her mother “shattered”, and how she attempted suicide because of it.
The book continues:
“This betrayal from my father shattered my mother to the extent that she actually tried (and thankfully failed) to end her life.
“It took me a while to realise that it wasn’t normal for fathers to leave after dinner every evening.
“That fathers didn’t come home in the morning for breakfast and a change of clothes before leaving for the office.
“That fathers didn’t spend the night with some variation of ‘Seema Aunty’ (that’s what we called his other wife; name changed).”
According to reports, Neena Gupta’s mother Shakuntala married a man of a different caste.
Her father, Roop Narain Gupta, was torn between his two families and had two sons from his second marriage.
Neena Gupta had an Instagram video chat with Kareena Kapoor Khan for the launch of her autobiography Sach Kahun Toh on Monday, June 14, 2021.

During the conversation, Neena revealed to Kareena that she has been writing the autobiography for 20 years.
She also said she would often wonder if people would even want to read about her.
She said:
“I would start and wonder, ‘What is there to write about my life? Why would people be interested in reading it?’
“Then the lockdown happened… and I did a lot of thinking about my life and decided to resume writing again.
“Everything is out of my system now. Things I was hiding for so many years. That’s a big relief.”
“I think, maybe after reading the book, even if one person doesn’t make the mistake which I did, if they feel ‘yeah, we should not do this’, it’ll be worth it.”
Neena Gupta also opened up about her own relationships, revealing that she was once dumped by a man she was just about to marry.
