Bollywood star Neena Gupta has opened up on her first marriage to Amlan Kumar Ghose.

The veteran actress said that she met Amlan while they were students, and “hit it off immediately”.

She also discussed how they met “secretly” on the campus of IIT Delhi, and went on dates together in his car.

Neena revealed all in her autobiography Sach Kahun Toh. In the book, she describes her experience with Amlan as thrilling, as having a boyfriend was “strictly forbidden”.

Neena’s marriage to Amlan lasted less than a year, and she said her reasons for marrying him were “childish”.

Speaking of her marriage and why it failed, Neena said that she only tied the knot with Amlan to be able to travel.

She said:

“My mother was so strict that it was such a big thing to go out with boys for a trip. That was a very childish thing to do but I was childish.”

However, Neena admits that she still has no regrets. She revealed:

“I don’t regret. It was part of growing up. That was me and it was okay. It was a very stupid thing to do but at that time, everybody is stupid.”

In her autobiography, Neena Gupta spoke of how she kept her relationship with Amlan a secret from everyone.

However, when the relationship got more serious she decided to tell her mother, who controlled her freedom even more as a result.

Neena and Amlan married in an Arya Samaj ceremony with close family and friends present.

According to Neena, Amlan’s parents did not approve of him being with a non-Bengali woman, so they wed without their knowledge.

After their nuptials, Neena Gupta and Amlan Kumar Ghose lived in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar while Amlan looked for a job and Neena pursued a Masters degree in Sanskrit.

Neena also revealed that she continued doing theatre alongside her studies, and “started dreaming of becoming a theatre actor”.

However, she admitted that her new husband “viewed things differently”.

Amlan thought that Neena would settle down and have a family, but instead she had “become a bit too ambitious”.

The pair then realised they wanted different things, as Amlan wanted to be with a “solid homemaker”.

Despite their divorce, Neena Gupta said that she has nothing bad to say about Amlan.

In her book, she describes him as a “wonderful man”, and their decision to part ways was mutual.

Neena Gupta’s autobiography Sach Kahun Toh came out in June 2021. It is available to purchase on Amazon.
