“We had taken this decision before our marriage"
Nadir Ali caused controversy when he questioned model Sunita Marshall about her interfaith marriage.
On his podcast, the YouTuber asked if she would convert because she is married to Hassan Ahmed.
Nadir asked: “When will you convert to Islam?”
Taken aback, Sunita stated that there was no pressure from her husband or her in-laws.
She replied: “There is no pressure on converting to Islam from Hassan Ahmed or from his family.
“However, people comment on Instagram but it doesn’t matter to me.”
She went on to say that if an individual wished to change their religion, they should have the right to do it by their hearts’ wishes, otherwise it was ineffective.
Sunita added that her children follow her husband’s religion.
“We had taken this decision before our marriage that our kids will follow Islam because I am living with in-laws and they can teach the kids better as their father, grandparents are Muslims.
“My kids recite the Quran, offer prayers and fast in Ramadan. I have kept them in one direction or else they would have gotten confused.”
Sunita stated that she was happy with the decision.
But after the podcast was published, members of the entertainment industry expressed their anger towards the YouTuber, accusing him of asking inappropriate questions.
Some even went as far as to say that it was Nadir who needed wisdom.
Showing support for Sunita, Nadia Afghan said:
“So proud of you for handling this downright disgraceful line of questioning so gracefully.
“As for Nadir Ali, the only thing this did for you is that we now know for a fact there is a village of idiots and the population is flourishing.”
Model Mathira took to social media and wrote:
“This is so wrong how can you corner someone? What type of questions are these! He really should stop trying to make his guests uncomfortable.”
Anoushey Ashraf said:
“Why ask such a question? Isn’t it a personal choice?”
“And knowing that backlash, technicalities and questions will be raised by most Pakistanis, why put someone in that position? Anyhow, she handled it well.”
Acknowledging the support, Sunita expressed her thanks and requested the public not to send hurtful messages to Nadir Ali.
She said: “ I would like to thank you all for supporting me. I will also request all of you, to kindly not harass the interviewer anymore.
“Also I would ask the interviewing fraternity not to ask such personal questions again in the future.”
