"My wife has been through devastating trauma."

A soon-to-be mother lost her child in a miscarriage after seeing her husband getting beaten up in a street attack.

Shabaz Shakat, aged 32, was targeted by a gang of five – one woman and four men – in broad daylight outside his home.

The incident happened at around 1 pm in Wellesley Gardens on April 2, 2019.

The gang had tried to break into their home when his then-pregnant was inside. Shabaz was two streets away and quickly came home after being called by his terrified wife.

When he arrived, he was confronted and then beaten with a metal steering wheel lock. The group also smashed away at his car.

His wife, who has not been named, was forced to watch the assault from the upstairs bedroom window.

It is believed that the gang are known to both victims and that they were targeted.

The mother-of-four, who was six weeks pregnant, went into a state of shock as Shabaz lay in the street in a pool of blood.

The woman lost her baby in hospital two days later, as reported by BirminghamLive.

Shabaz said: “I’ve just lost my first baby.

“My beautiful wife has just miscarried because of this, watching me get battered and left for dead from the upstairs window.

“They tried to burst into my house and battered me to a bloody pulp. I just wanted to defend my house, defend my wife.

“My wife has been through devastating trauma. She has had a miscarriage and she watched get beaten up from the top of our window in our house by five people.

“I had my head cracked open by a metal bar, which was part of a steering wheel lock. I suffered three broken ribs and I’m lucky I’m alive. They didn’t finish me off.”

Shabaz and his wife got married in January 2019. He added:

“We’re devastated, furious, hurt, heartbroken. We’ve been robbed of our little baby, our first together.”

His wife is a mother to four children, who she had with her first husband, who died in a car accident in Moseley seven years ago.
