The stigma surrounding divorced women continues.
Pakistani actor and writer Mira Sethi has opened up about her divorce for the first time, revealing its emotional impact and societal consequences.
Speaking on a recent podcast, she disclosed that her marriage ended quietly in March 2023 during Kuch Ankahi’s filming.
She explained that the separation occurred only months into the project, making it a delicate yet powerful personal moment.
Sethi described how work provided her strength, adding that filming gave her structure while navigating personal heartbreak and confusion.
She shared that colleagues, including Sajal Aly, Muhammad Ahmad, and director Nadeem Baig, knew her struggle and supported her.
According to Sethi, they were gentle and encouraging, which allowed her to continue working during extremely difficult circumstances.
She reflected on how divorce is judged differently for women, recalling a memorable line from an older television drama.
The dialogue stated that a divorced woman becomes “a thorn for society”, words that stayed with her long afterwards.
Although acknowledging that societal attitudes are slowly shifting, she said the stigma surrounding divorced women continues to persist significantly.
Sethi emphasised the importance of conversations, noting that several actresses she knows have quietly experienced similar personal situations.
She described divorce as not only painful but also as a collapse of narrative that challenges one’s identity.
Marriage, she said, creates a framework and story to belong to, which collapses when the relationship eventually breaks down.
Sethi added that the end leaves a void, forcing individuals to ask themselves who they are afterwards.
Despite pain, she stressed there is also a deeper meaning, growth, and reflection that can emerge through such loss.
Her fans admired her for opening up and being transparent with her audience.
Mira Sethi married Bilal Siddiqui in an intimate California ceremony in November 2019.
Her parents, Najam Sethi and Jugnu Mohsin, are noted journalists, while her brother Ali Sethi is a singer.
She has carved her own independent identity within Pakistan’s entertainment industry, separate from her family’s accomplishments and reputation.
Her standout performances include Paristaan, Kuch Ankahi, and the film Cake, where she earned praise for thoughtful storytelling.
Audiences admire her ability to balance powerful acting with tackling themes of social relevance, including gender roles and stigma.
By sharing her experience publicly, Mira Sethi highlighted the evolving yet difficult conversation surrounding divorce and women in society.
