Prashanth Neel’s KGF: Chapter 2 has become the biggest day one opener in India.

The Kannada action film was released on April 15, 2022, and grossed nearly Rs. 135 Crore (£13.5 million) in India.

According to Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the Hindi version grossed over Rs. 64 Crore (£6.4 million).

As a result, KGF: Chapter 2 overtakes WAR and Thugs of Hindostan to become the highest-grossing Hindi film on its opening day.

In addition to the film breaking Hindi box office records, it is also the highest opening in Karnataka for a Kannada film as well as the highest opener in Kerala.

While Hombale Films produced the film, KGF: Chapter 2 was presented in North-Indian markets by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment and AA Films.

The film stars Yash and features an ensemble cast that includes Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty and Raveena Tandon.

KGF: Chapter 2 released to a mixed response among critics.

Taran Adarsh praised the film and said that it “has a fresh, international look and doesn’t look like a regional film at all”.

Subha J Rao of Firstpost stated that the writing and conception were “far better” than Chapter 1.

However, NDTV were more critical, stating that the big action sequences lack any element of surprise or realism.

KGF: Chapter 2 is a battering ram of a movie. It is designed to pound the audience to submission.

“It is only for Yash fans and for those who feel an assault on the senses is a form of cinema.

“But if you love your eardrums and have had your fill of the super-heroic exploits of an underdog-turned-top dog hero, KGF: Chapter 2 is best avoided.

“It whips up plenty of heat and dust but yields no gold.”

Despite the mixed critical responses, audiences enjoyed the film, with cinemas in India packed.

One person said: “KGF: Chapter 2 is the best Pan-Indian film of all time.

“Exceeded my expectations and also it was the best theatre experience for an Indian film I ever had!”

Even celebrities loved the film, with popular star Shehnaaz Gill stating that she “loved the violence”.

She tweeted: “Congratulations, I love you…All… Loved the violence Yash. Peace out.”

The film will continue to break box office records, but on the prospect of a sequel, Prashanth Neel said:

“If people love KGF: Chapter 2, we could think of continuing the franchise.”
