"It’s a natural fit between the two brands."
Blackburn’s billionaire Issa brothers have announced another expansion into the United States.
Mohsin and Zuber Issa are set to open a restaurant in partnership with a famous pizza chain.
Their US branch, EG America, will be partnering up with Sbarro and opening a restaurant in Ohio.
The eatery is located in the Columbus Market and is one of seven planned openings across the state in 2021. This comes after EG Group purchased Colorado-based business Schrader Oil in November 2020.
The brothers had established an American headquarters in 2019.
Sbarro hopes that the partnership will mark the beginning of a long relationship with the Blackburn-based company.
Sbarro CEO David Karam said: “The partnership with EG America is very exciting. It’s a natural fit between the two brands.
“While pizza has been a top-selling food item in convenience stores for many years, Sbarro offers premium quality pizza, Stromboli and other menu items that are freshly prepared each day in-store.
“We pioneered the concept of pizza-by-the-slice in our first location in Brooklyn, New York in 1956, and have retained the made from scratch recipes ever since.”
EG America senior vice president Cindy Rantanen said:
“We are excited about our expanding partnership with Sbarro.
“We are thrilled to offer our customers fresh, handmade, authentic New York-style pizza as well as other Italian favourites.”
Mr Karam added: “Foodservice sales have been the fastest-growing segment in the convenience store industry generating over $60 billion in revenue and 22 per cent of profits.
“Most of the major convenience store chains have been working to optimize their foodservice offerings and we believe Sbarro is an ideal fit.”
Since buying their first garage in Bury in 2001, the Issa brothers have continued to expand their business empire.
Their most high-profile acquisitions came in 2020 when they purchased supermarket chain Asda from its American owner Walmart for £6.8 billion.
They also acquired iconic Mellor venue Stanley House.
Attempts to buy coffee chain Caffe Nero are ongoing and it has seen Lord Alan Sugar offer his support to the brothers.
On the international stage, EG Group has also expanded into Germany with a €485 million acquisition of 285 petrol station forecourts formerly belonging to German company OMV Deutschland.
Following the announcement that the Issa brothers will be opening a restaurant, they hope that it is an early stage of their inroads into the United States.
