"Whenever we went to speak to him he would abuse us."
An Indian woman was arrested after handing herself in to the police for allegedly killing her husband. The incident happened in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
Mamta Porandwar, aged 41, surrendered before the police on January 2, 2020, after she bludgeoned her husband to death with a hammer.
It was reported that she killed Mahesh due to his ongoing drinking habit and illicit relations with other women.
The couple and their son had lived in Bhagwan Nagar, but in September 2019, Mahesh moved to Jaywant Nagar, leaving Mamta and their son Manthan.
At the time, Mahesh had changed careers. He left his job as a transporter and began working as a moneylender.
Mahesh never sent his family money for any expenses which forced his wife to take up a job as a caretaker.
On the day of the murder, she went to her husband’s rented apartment to ask for money for their son’s college admission.
Manthan explained: “My father did not give us any money. Whenever we went to speak to him he would abuse us.
“Some days back when we had gone to speak with him, he and his neighbours attacked us.
“My mother had sustained injuries on her face but when we went to the police to file a complaint we saw my father filing a complaint against her for assault.”
Manthan revealed that his father had a drinking habit and his alcoholism had left Mamta suffering from depression and regular migraines.
He went on to say that his mother had consumed several pills before going to meet Mahesh at his home on January 2.
Manthan added: “I later found several empty packets of pills at the home.”
When the Indian woman asked for money, an argument broke out between the estranged couple.
Police have said that when Mamta criticised Mahesh’s drinking habit, a fight occurred.
In a fit of anger, Mamta picked up a hammer that was lying nearby and hit her husband over the head with it, causing him to fall down.
Out of fear that he would get up and beat her up, Mamta repeatedly struck her husband until he was dead.
After realising what she had done, Mamta went to Ajni Police Station and confessed to the crime.
Officers rushed to the apartment and sent the body for a post-mortem. Meanwhile, Mamta was arrested and a case of murder was registered against her.
On January 3, 2020, Mamta was produced in front of a court. The Times of India reported that she was remanded in custody until January 6.
