"he went to the fourth floor and hurled both the children"
An Indian man has been arrested after he threw two young children from a fourth-floor balcony.
The incident happened on June 14, 2020, in Kolkata. One of the boys, aged two, was killed while the other, aged six, was seriously injured.
Following his arrest, he admitted that he was annoyed by the noises the children made while playing near his front door.
The accused was identified as 55-year-old Shiv Kumar Gupta.
He was taken to Lalbazaar police headquarters for interrogation.
One police officer said: “During interrogation, he confessed his crime. It is unfortunate that a two-year-old boy was killed, while another received serious injuries.
“The injured victim is stable and based on the interrogation we have arrested his neighbour Shiv Kumar Gupta.”
It was reported that Gupta became “annoyed” by the noise that the children were making while playing.
In a fit of rage, he threw two-year-old Shivam off the fourth-floor balcony before doing the same to his elder brother Vishal.
An officer explained: “A few days ago he had a fight with the boys but their parents intervened and amicably resolved the matter.
“Today around 6 pm, Shiv once again became furious after the children went to the fourth floor to play.
“In a fit of rage, he went to the fourth floor and hurled both the children from the fourth floor.”
Gupta allegedly tried to throw the sister off the balcony, however, she managed to escape and call her parents and neighbours.
The two boys were taken to hospital where Shivam was declared dead. His elder brother remains in a serious condition.
Neighbours heard about the shocking incident and grabbed Gupta. They held him until the police arrived.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Gupta would often get into arguments with his neighbours.
The Indian man told police that he regularly consumed alcohol and could not control his anger when he was drunk.
Gupta was a real estate broker who owned a small transport business. He told police that he could not tolerate the noise made by the children as they played.
One neighbour said:
“He always complained about the children playing on the balcony. He would shout whenever a ball entered his room.”
“But we thought that he was an intolerant eccentric and ignored him. But we could not think in wildest of our dreams that he would do this to the little children.”
The neighbour added that the parents were forced to let the children play on the balcony as they feared that they would contract Coronavirus if they played in the park.
Gupta was charged with Section 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
