"They had shot such videos earlier also, so there should be a reason why he did a live [stream]."
After streaming live sex, an Indian man has been arrested by police as a woman claimed he had raped her. The two had sex which was streamed on Facebook Live.
While it initially appeared on the social media app, it quickly spread to other platforms, including WhatsApp. Afterwards, the woman filed a complaint with rape allegations.
On 16th September 2017, police arrested the 23-year-old, identified as Linu, in Kerala. In her complaint, the woman claimed that she had consented to record sex with Linu. However, she added that she was unaware he was actually streaming live sex.
In addition, she also claimed that he falsely promised her marriage to persuade her to sleep with him. As a result, she accused Linu of raping her.
With these allegations, it could mark as Kerala’s first case surrounding revenge porn. Police have booked him under rape and sections of the Information Technology Act.
Since the arrest, police revealed more details on their investigation into the allegations. Prior to the man streaming live sex, he and the woman engaged in a six-month relationship after she left her husband. She still remains married to her former partner and has one child.
Throughout the relationship, Linu would stay over at the woman’s house. The 23-year-old also promised he would eventually marry her.
Kerala police have revealed that they have seized the man’s phone. On the device, they found intimate videos of Linu with the woman and added to The News Minute: “They had shot such videos earlier also, so there should be a reason why he did a live [stream]. We will question him more after getting him in police custody.”
Adimali Circle Inspector (CI) K Sabu also added to the media outlet:
“He (Linu) said that he did it to get more Likes on Facebook. But there is a chance that this is revenge porn. He might have done it to take revenge on her when they fought. She knew that he was recording the act but did not know that he was broadcasting it.”
In addition, the police have viewed the broadcast and suggest that the act didn’t appear forced. They said this could mean the allegations may not hold. Meanwhile, the woman’s sister has complained to police on the incident. She requested them to remove the footage from the internet.
This follows similar cases of Indian men streaming live sex, without their partners knowing. Indeed, some couples also find it provides financial opportunities, meaning a rise in such acts.
Meanwhile, police will continue their investigation into the rape allegations.
