An unnamed Indian girl, aged 19, from Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district, was beaten for eloping with a man from another caste.
She was assaulted with sticks by male members of her family over her relationship with the young man.
The incident was filmed and it shows the woman being attacked with sticks in broad daylight. The video has gone viral.
The incident circulated on WhatsApp on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.
In the video, which is believed to have been shot on a mobile phone possibly by one of the men, the woman was forced to walk down a village road.
At the same time, she is being beaten with sticks. The Indian girl screams in pain and begs for mercy, however, passers-by ignore her ordeal and move on.
After the video widely circulated, the police took action and arrested four men who were allegedly responsible for beating the woman.
Officers have said that while a video of the incident circulated on September 4, the actual incident happened on August 31, 2019.
They explained that the woman was beaten over her relationship with a man from another caste.
After seeing the video of the assault, the police began an investigation into the matter.
During a preliminary investigation, police officers discovered that the incident happened in Temachi village near Ambua Police Station.
Police officers explained that when the young woman’s relatives found out about the relationship, they made her walk down a road while hitting her with sticks as punishment.
Alirajpur Superintendent Vipul Shrivastava said:
“We got the video through WhatsApp. A few villagers told us that this video was shot in Temachi village which comes under Ambua Police Station.
“We have not received any complaint. Only after the statements of the woman and her father are recorded will the police be able to take any further action in the matter.”
The victim’s father went to the police to file a complaint against the family members.
He told officers that his daughter was brutally beaten and when he protested, he was also attacked.
After recording the complaint, the police registered a case against the woman’s brother-in-law and three of his friends.
The charges were under sections 294 (obscene acts), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
India Today reported that police officers have confirmed that the four suspects were arrested.
