Police have arrested an Indian brother after he shot his elder sister dead following a property dispute between the two.

The shocking incident happened in the village of Rurka Kalan, Jalandhar, Punjab.

The 23-year-old man had killed his sister in the early hours of July 12, 2020, and the police registered a case the next day.

According to the police, the accused was identified as Resham Lal.

A criminal case against the accused was registered based on the statement of the father Gurpal Singh. He said that Resham had murdered his 28-year-old sister Pardeep Kaur.

In his complaint, Gurpal said that his two sons Resham and Gurdeep Singh were demanding their share from the house.

As a result, they were in conflict with their elder sister, who worked in Chandigarh.

Pardeep had been married and was living in Neelu village. She and her husband have an eight-year-old son, however, they later got a divorce.

She received a payment from her divorce settlement. From the money she got, Pardeep invested Rs. 6 Lakh (£6,300) into the property in Rurka Kalan.

When the brothers started asking for their share in the property, arguments started between the siblings.

They said the property was theirs as sons, but Pardeep argued that she was owed money for her investment, therefore, the property was hers as well.

On July 11, Pardeep returned to her native home from Chandigarh and during the evening, Resham and her got into an argument over the property.

Gurpal explained:

“I saw Resham roaming around my daughter room at 4 am and suddenly he pulled out a pistol and shot his sister in the forehead.”

“Resham then escaped from the house.”

Gurpal immediately informed the police and officers registered a case under Section 302 (punishment to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of the Arms Act.

Police made efforts to locate Resham. They eventually tracked down and arrested Resham after he returned to the village and was about to leave again.

During interrogation, the Indian brother confessed to killing his sister.

He told police that he obtained the gun illegally from Uttar Pradesh.

Resham had been on the run. During that time, he spent his time hiding at a Sikh temple in the Ludhiana area. He served meals to visitors and ate there also. Resham even slept there.

Resham said that on the night of the shooting, he and his sister had a major row over the property.
