However, what about the older generation – how do they cope with this ‘unknown’ world?
Most of them are oblivious to techniques and often feel left behind.

1. Â Â Buy them Basic Smartphones
Smartphones are essential in order to stay in touch with the modern world.
Install useful apps that are easy to use.
Let them try it independently after demonstrating how to use it.
2. Â Â Email Configuration
Configure their email settings with preset passwords for easy access on their phone. Show them how to send and receive emails on their device.
Similarly, show them on the computer or tablet as well. This will also give you and them another way of keeping in touch with each other.
Also having an e-mail address can give them the opportunity to subscribe to organisations so they can keep up to date with the things they like the most.
3. Â Â Teach the Basics of Internet
Demonstrate how to use search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Emphasise on the fact that they can have any information they want at the click of a button.
For instance, the latest news headlines and sports updates are easily available 24/7, there is no need to leave the house and buy a newspaper.
Also they can access news from countries such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka online, so they can keep up to date with what’s happening back home too.
4. Â Â Achieve Fitness through Apps
Install apps that work in the background so they can keep track of the number of steps taken daily. Breeze and FitPort are exemplary pedometers. This will encourage health and fitness via technology.
Also with newer smartphones such as the iPhone 6s’ and Samsung Galaxys they have in built fitness apps that are waiting to be opened.
5. Â Â Keep in touch via Skype/Viber/FaceTime
Install Skype or Viber on the desktop and phone for easy access. Subsequently, calls can be received and made from either device. This is great for the elderly who have difficulty walking.
This will give them a sense of being connected and independent. Furthermore, video calls allow them to see their loved ones. If they have an iPhone, FaceTime would also be an easy option.
Viber is also great when needing to calls relatives in various countries, as all that is needed is for two people to have the Viber app and an Internet connection.
Highlight the fact that it’s free. Inevitably, free communication hits a soft spot for most Desis. Say goodbye to calling cards!
6. Â Â Send Free Text Messages via WhatsApp
WhatsApp is another free method of communication from a smartphone that will allow them to send messages to family and friends.
Teach them how to have a family group chat with international relatives. This will give them a sense of being connected globally.
7. Â Â Watch Desi Soaps Online
Demonstrate the use of YouTube and subscribe to frequently watched channels. This will ensure they are up to date on their favourite shows on Zee TV and Star Plus. Missing a show will never be problematic again!
8. Â Â Recipes Online
Recipes are found everywhere online. Help organise subscriptions via RSS feed for tablets. Moreover, there are numerous YouTube cooking channels that offer free subscription.
The Paprika app is a must-have app for any recipe lover. Download it on their tablet or computer for easy organisation of recipes that they collect from online.
9. Â Â GPS on Smartphones
Google Maps on smartphones are a popular choice. This eradicates the need for an external GPS. Moreover, Waze App is extremely useful as it takes traffic into consideration via satellites and has a social interaction functionality.

10.   Download Music Tracks and Playlists
Technology has truly evolved, from a Walkman to a Discman to an Mp3 player. Advancement in technology has made smartphones an all-in-one machine.
Illustrate ways in which they can listen to their music on their phone and create playlists for them. Help them switch from their prehistoric methods!
Lastly, be patient while assisting the older generation. Bear in mind that technology is not second nature to them. Learning technology might appear intimidating, so be understanding!
It may take time before the elder desi generation become pros at using some of the apps discussed here.
After demonstrating easy techniques and tips, ensure they can mirror those actions. This will give them confidence to become technologically independent, and make our desi parents more tech savvy!
