"The Google App got an icon update on iOS."
Google has quietly rolled out a redesigned version of its iconic ‘G’ logo, the first major update in almost ten years.
The new design replaces the older segmented colour format with a smooth, multicoloured gradient. It blends Google’s signature red, yellow, green and blue into a seamless swirl.
These softer transitions mark a move away from the rigid, blocky look of the previous logo.
The change also aligns with recent visual updates seen in Google’s AI branding, including Gemini and the AI Mode in Search.
The redesigned ‘G’ has already started appearing on the Google app for iOS and on Pixel phones. It also features in version 16.18 (beta) of the Google Search app for Android.
However, the older segmented ‘G’ still appears on other Android devices and on web platforms. This suggests a phased rollout rather than an immediate global switch.
Google has not yet made a formal announcement about the redesign or its full release timeline.
The updated logo is expected to bring consistency across Google’s product family.
It hints that icons for other services, like Chrome, Maps and more, could receive similar treatment in future.
Social media users gave their thoughts on the change and what this means.
One wrote: “Google just gave its ‘G’ logo a fresh new look!
“At first, it seems like just a smoother gradient… but I think it means a lot more.
“We’re stepping into the AI era, where things aren’t just black and white, 0s and 1s anymore. It’s all about endless possibilities, fuzzy edges, and infinite gradients.
“Nice move Google. Subtle but powerful.”
Afser Hossen said: “The Google App got an icon update on iOS.
“Google just rolled out a fresh update to its app icon on iOS, and I’m loving the direction they’re taking!
“The new design swaps out the classic flat-colour “G” for a sleek gradient effect – think brighter reds, greens, and yellows with a more saturated blue, blending seamlessly into each other.
“It’s a small change, but it speaks volumes about Google’s evolving brand identity in a multi-device, AI-driven world.”
This marks the first major logo change since September 2015.
It was updated to a modern typeface called Product Sans.
As part of that, the ‘G’ icon changed from the lowercase white ‘g’ on a blue background to the circular design we’ve had for the past 10 years.
Similar to the Google Play logo update on its 10th anniversary, this redesign reflects a broader visual refresh across Google’s ecosystem, carefully timed and modernised for a new era.
